hi y'all, have been reading hard all the LED threads (yes all 350 pages and more) and are ready to take the plunge. Much kudos to those who've taken the time to write up their experiences - good and bad - and to those so willing to share the knowledge. Would be moving from 1000w HPS which is currently doing a pretty good job on the 4x4 raised box (1 ft deep) situated in a 5'x5' room. Box is planted out with 16 plants in a 4x4 formation. 1 week of veg then straight into flower from 4 main cola struck clones. Efficiency and longevity take preference over budget.
Am veering towards 8 x Vero 29 3500K driven off 2 x Meanwell HLG 185H C1400B with the COB's mounted onto two seperate heatsinks (4 on each in a slight zig zag fashion).
A couple of questions;
- Will the 3500k colour temp be OK to cover the 1 week of veg as well as flowering or should I mix them up a bit?
- Will the 8 COB's throw out enough light to cover the 16 plants in the 4x4 bed or do I need more? Ideally the power consumption would be less for a similar result - about 1 gram per watt on average (very rough I know).
- If 8 are enough would I have to drive them to hard to achieve that result? Would rather err on the side of caution.
- Would it be better to actively cool them or would a passive HS be ok?
- What spec HS would you recommend for active/passive? Are there any recomended suppliers on Ali or ebay that ship international.
- Would the Cree chips be a better option and out of curiosity why?
- Will moving to LED mean less heat being generated in the room? Ideally it would as in summer the heat generated by the lamps require constant cooling. Currently the HPS ballasts are outside the room.
