How to count nodes?

I know what a node is but what is a true node? How do i count em? And i did a search query for everyone thats gona say do a search"

i count em on my toes....or a fancy scientific calculator... a node is simply where an arm or two grows out of the main stalk..

the term true node comes from the initial set of arms on a plant...sucker leaves dont constitute a node..all others after that are true
