Another Cree CXA3070 DIY Thread

I hang mine at a 25cm distance, but i have 4 @ 1400mA for 75x75cm. And when i have them closer i get some slight light burn.But you can try at 15-20, and if you get burn you can raise them higher. For passive cooling you need ALOT bigger heatsinks, and if you do not have a good place to get them cheap, i think the cpu coolers and a 12v psu will be cheaper. The heat around the heatsinks will not move unless you have really beefy ventilation, and therefore you need a bigger surface on the heatsinks. I found a 12v1A psu at ebay that cost something like 3USD with free shipping, and the Artic Alpine 11plus are sold for approx 10 USD a piece. The efficiency might not be great, but you are running 2x 0.16A fans from it, so total energy consumption will be low.

Could I use the 12V1A psu to wire two PC fans each running 250ma in series, or will the voltage drop to 6V. I get confussed about if they need to be wired to parallel or series. I would use it to provide ventilation in the grow room. As to the passive heatsink I will be using NOFAN 85 and have tested it running the 3070 at 700ma and a small draft seem all that is needed. I was lucky in getting 6 of them for free. The only down side was their height.

So in summary in the flower room I will have
2 x CXA3070
2 x Meanwell APC-35-700
2 x NOFAN passive heatsink
2 x 12V@250ma 120mm PC fans
2 x APC-12-350 to drive fans ( mayby replace with your suggestion of the PSU )
1 x 12V 100mm extraction fan with Rhine filter.

And the veg room
1 x CXA3070
1 x Meanwell APC-12-350
1 x NOFAN passive heatsink
1 x 12V@250ma 120mm PC fans
1 x APC-12-350 to drive the fan

Every thing will be controlled and timed via a programmable extension socket Energenie four socket power management system.

That in a nutshell is everything minus the grow room's which will be made from 3 layer sound proof clading incased in a slightly larger box to run silently at around 15Db.

In flower with high bin CXA 3070's you'll want between 25 to 35 watts a sq/ft,I'm running just over 30. If you have temp issues going with 25 will still give you nice results and 35 if you want to push for max yield,I got 1.4 grams per watt at just over 30 last run. I'm counting the drivers and cooler fans in my sq/ft number.

Thanks captainmorgan, I can only get the Z2 in 3000K and Z4 in 5000K. So do you still think my flower room setup using 700ma (23W) will be ok with two 3070 covering 60cm x 30cm. Lastly do you have any input as to hanging height. I am going to go with 15cm but am worried that the sides may not get much light as the specs seem to show most of the light below 60 degrees, beyound that the light falls off considerably.

You should be good,my chart shows the 3000k Z2 at 700 ma pulls 24.47 watts so with the driver and cooling fan your over the 25 sq/ft number. At 6" above the plant I would keep a close eye on it and if you can start higher and work down to that it might be a good idea.

Typing this I get the feeling I may come across as a whimp, asking such basic questions, But by my estimate I will be spending a few hundred on the setup; lights as well as the grow room so I need to plan the dimensions.

As I am trying to make a simple low power setup, I am hoping to go for passive cooling which seems to work as long as you dont run the 3070 higher the 700ma. My setup will have the dimensions of 95cmx35cmx110cm, which will include a mini extraction fan with Rhino carbon filter (12W) inside, so space is very tight.

I am using 5000k 3070 run @ 800mA = 32w. Like kkman said depends on how fast you want them to grow.
 
20 is not that much to order. 2 or 3 of you should team up and get yourselves a few each. Or just 1 person buy them and sell your extras. They will move like hot cakes. Once I had 2 I wanted and bought 8 more very quickly. After seeing how happy these girls were, it was a no-brainer.
 
20 isnt bad.....i actually just pulled the trigger on 20 cxa3070 ab bin from verical. 2week wait. Its min50 for the 3590s though. $936 and change to get the 3070s to my door....vs. $2500 for the 3590s.... :shock:

I was running Elite Agro bulbs and it had the 730 spike.
When I switched to the 3070, it looks like they take a little more time.
So, I will be trying the 730 spike to see what happens.
Will 8 of these cover a 6x6 canopy and will the 1" square tubing be good enough for the heatsink?

Also here is my lighting schedule so far.
week 1-5 12/12
week 2-6 13.5/10.5
week 3-7 13.5/10.5
week 4-8 12/12

Hey tt,I'm a little sleep deprived and hyped up on cold meds so I'm not sure I fully follow you. Are you going to run the 730 during your lights on cycle? If so what is the 730 percentage of your total watts? And I'm not understanding your light schedule,not very clear headed right now,pretty sick and medicated.

I think that I'll be running the 730's for 15 minutes at lights out. Though I'm running 16 3070's at 1400ma over a 6x6.

It takes very little 730 for the phytochrome switch after lights out. growlightsource.com has links to some good info and they have youtube videos also. Their 730 floods have chinese 730 multichip LEDS with 9 diodes for the 10 watt version and they claim 8'x8' coverage for it and 16'x16' for the 20 watt version with only 5 minutes after lights out. So I think you have enough LEDS for two 6'x6' areas based on that and with the short time their on,they don't require much cooling.
