When during the course of our evolution did we gain souls?

I was under the impression the word "soul" was just a metaphor for consciousness, being aware of oneself.

If we are talking about a soul in the spiritual sense... no one knows if we have them or not, the jury is still out.

Yes, but with no evidence for them, and by applying critical thinking, there is no valid reason to give the idea much thought. From our current knowledge, their existence is very improbable...

I didn't think most Christians believe in evolution.
As odd as it is, it seems easier for some people to believe someone could survive inside a whale
as opposed to humans adapting to our environment.

Good question though.

I think there are Christians who believe in some form of evolution, but not that we came from another primate. As to the soul, well, god put that there!

things evolve yes, but so much to the point where people became mer people, and monkeys became people. is just too far out. now soul yes we do, monkeys no they dont. they dont have a delevoped brain that makes then capable of sustaining themselves beyond a generation. its all instinct, like preprogramed. we have free will and the ability to makes things happen. animals are just at the mercy of nature. thye dont have souls because they are already free and in their mind they are already in heaven in a way.

no offense , but i cant stand it when a catholic hitler comes out and says something and the whole christian people are supposed to follow it. what a bunch of hog wash. evolution happened but not from monkey to man. man was always in his current form. yes his brows where a Neanderthal at one time. and the facesdid move and uni brow became 2 brows and the eyes came out a little more, the jaw shifted. but from completly hairy monkey to no hair and no animals stuck in between evolutionary points makes it a lie. the animal bones they found were just another ape that is no extinct

I suggest, you read what he said before rambling like a 5 years old, throwing around 8th grade anthropology knowledge.
He basically says the same thing as you just stated...

it is childish to take it that far, you sound like a teenager berating someone, that is all.

Humans and our cousins (other great apes) shared a common ancestor about 5 million years ago. When between then and now, did we (and not them) develop a soul?

Gadfly question ... do we know the great apes andor monkeys are definitively soulless? cn

Do we know definitively we have souls (as defined in this thread)?
Well that is part of the question; isn't it?
Imo the authority of religion hinges upon both the presence and consequence of soul as separate from our material, animal nature. So the question is a big one. As far as I can tell, the restriction of souls to humans wasn't done fairly but "because the priests say so". cn

I worked with a born again a few years ago, and he informed me that the earth was only about 5000 years old and that man co-existed with dinosaurs. Where do people come up with this shit? It angers me and amuses me at the same time. Souls do not exist however, James Brown is the King of Soul.

When does something suddenly decide to "stop" evolving? Why do whales have leg bones if they never had legs? And if they did have legs, are you sture they lived in the ocean? And what do you mean sustain themselves beyond a generation? That doesn't make sense... intelligence has nothing to do with the proliferation of a species, but rather how well they can adapt to a changing environment.

its all instinct, like preprogramed. we have free will and the ability to makes things happen. animals are just at the mercy of nature. thye dont have souls because they are already free and in their mind they are already in heaven in a way.
Instinct? Intelligent animals such as great apes, dolphins, dogs, cats, etc. live off nothing but instinct??

Watch this video and tell me if you still think this is "instinct"...

You clearly have very little knowledge of animal consciousness and evolution.

What person, who sees the logic and obviousness of evolution, ever said we have a soul? Or that we grew a soul during evolution? We don't have souls. I don't and you don't. This is all we get. Boo hoo.
