Why do people collect weapon after weapon, lots of people have more than the few guns they would need if they were to be actually and only "tools". I would need what in order to protect myself? A shotgun, a reasonably powerrful rifle and a few handguns, one I could keep on my person, one or two I could keep close at my work and or home. Now why own more? Of course there are the standard reactions - why do collectors collect anything? I had a friend who was involved in competition chain saws so of course he had a number of them.

gun owners generally keep many arms for the same reason the military doesnt use just one kind of gun.

Military Small Arms Needs (Civilian Small Arms Needs)
sometimes you need a pistol, for close in defense of your position (or for defense against criminal attackers)
sometimes a pistol is all that can be carried in the cockpit or other areas where rifles are not feasible (or on your person)
sometimes you need a heavy gun for a dug in foe (or dangerous game)
sometimes you need to reach out and touch the enemy at long range (long shots are all you got for some critters)
sometimes you need a carbine for use in cover or heavy brush/jungle (classic game stalking hunting with a "brush gun")
sometimes you need a scattergun (you always need a scattergun)

Military Heavy Weapons Needs (Militia's Heavy Weapons Needs For Combating Tyranny)
sometimes you need to put a lot of lead downrange fast (you ALWAYS need to put a lot of lead downrange fast)
sometimes you need to make shit blow up (DUDE! explosions rock)
sometimes you need to make an entire section of the landscape disappear in a mushroom cloud (even washington is not retarded enough to blow up parts of america to keep power)

both groups are valid and constitutionally supported, restrictions on EITHER group is prohibited, despite what a few jackasses in robes think.

this is why our military swears an oath to the constitution, not whichever asshole is in power at the time.
we depend on their faithfulness to keep them from simply taking the government over by force, since most of the members of the services would mutiny before firing on the people or our elected leaders.

it's a Truxican Standoff, with the government the military and the people all pointing their guns at each other, and only the government and their goonsquads are really distrusted by the rest. when the shooting starts, the government will lose, and then the people and the military will either duke it out or come to an understanding and restore our constitution.
