Stealth Bedroom...Who Needs A Stealth Cab

Well I have been working on this for a long time. I recently moved to a 2 bedroom apt and wanted to use the spare bedroom as a grow space. Only problem, what happens if someone asks whats in that bedroom or someone wants to sleep over, etc, etc.

So I came up with this solution. I turned part of the bedroom into a "closet" with a secret door that leads to the bedroom.

Check it out and let me know what you think.

I keep a sign on my door that says PRIVATE, JOHN'S ROOM
AND I tell everyone that John (a ficticious person) rents the room for storage and he has the only key.

Nice. When you get it done, go back and tell the landlord he's charging you two bedroom rent for a one bedroom apt. Lowered rent + good weed = win/win

I was thinking about telling people that someone rented the room for storage and they have the only key. But I figured this would work just as well. While I was in the process of building, its been on and off for like 5 months, I just told people like maintenance and what not that it was my room mates room and he locks it.

But because when I moved I told everyone I got a one bedroom apt because I knew what I was going to do, I can't go telling people that I have a 2 bedroom now. That would sound weird.

On the window of the bedroom, I am going to build a shelf on the outside, put lattice over the window, and have some plants grow over it. THis will block the window just in case some one goes on that side of the yard they won't see a window there. It will just look like a planter box.

It wasn't letting me post more pics, so I logged off. Here are the finished pics.

Any and all comments and questions are welcomed.

Other than the fact there is a door handle hole thing on the flip side of that door frame. Pretty awesome idea.

Where is the "secret door" though? Im not catching that part.

I still have to fix that and hinge holes as well. A little wood putty and paint and thats all fixed.

The shelf is removable and the whole back wall pulls out.

i did a similar stealth set up with a secret door behind a set of shelves. one thought - i put in insulation on all internal surfaces, including the secret entry door, to help keep light, sound and smell where they belonged. easy and cheap improvement.

I don't know what it cost actually. Maybe like $75. The wood is cheap, I just covered it in joint compound, sanded it and used some spray texture to get the bumps. If you jsut paint the wood it look like painted wood. But with the compound on there and the texture, it look just like a wall.

The most expensive part was the spray texture $15, the paint $10, then the wood and everything was pretty cheap. Only like $25 worth of lumber, the joint compound wsa like $6, and I just had to buy some caulking and liquid nails.

You should be able to do it for under $100 easy.

If the back wall is moveable, there must be a crack down it. How will you fight the smell of Voluptuous buds growing?

That's a really neat setup. I'm moving to an apartment soon so I'm thinking about stuff like this. One thing that worries me though is the possibility of inspections by the management of the complex or their insurance company, or the possibility that my unit might need maintenance which would require an unwanted intrusion.

One question: What happens when it comes time for management to do maintenance work or a general inspection of the place?

I've been renting a room in the house my buddy owns for years now so I've had nothing to worry about. But I'm gonna be moving and I'm trying to decide if my ideas will work in a 2 bedroom apartment, or whether a 2 bedroom house would be more practical. Does anyone have experience in the frequency of general inspections for apartments vs. houses? Do they happen at all, am I just stressing out over nothing?

I have been growing in apt's for over 3yrs now with out a problem. For the first couple of years, I was just growing in the closet of my one bedroom apt. The managers office was like 40ft away. I even had a couple of plants going on the patio. I never had a problem there.

Now that I have moved to my 2 bedroom, there is no manager on site which is nice. The only reason they come to my apt is because I need something done. There is nothing that would need maintenence in the spare bedroom. A lot of apt have the breaker box in the spare bedroom, luckily mine is in the laundry room. So there is never a need to go in the spare bedroom for maintanence. But you may want to check that in the apt you are looking at.

When someone comes over for maintanence, I just close and lock the door. If they are fixing something in the bathroom, what reason would they have to go into my other bedroom? Or any bedroom for that matter? Plus, they have to give a 24hr notice before they can come in and I'm a card holder.

I wouldn't worry about growing in an apt. Just make sure you have the smell under control. For a while there I wasn't using any odor control and you could smell my apt almost a block away.

You say they have to give you 24hr notice before they can enter? If this is true what if they did come in without a 24 hr notice and snooped around and found a closet box with plants in it... this is what happened to me. I was at work and the maintenance guy came in and the next day the security guard said "whatever your growing in the closet needs to be out by tomorrow." I am also a card holder... But the maintenance guy came in randomly one day while I was at work...

24 hr notice is bogus they can do what they want if your in an appartment. It is their property :(
