Questions about commercial potting soils...

Hey all,

Spring is here and the garden centers are stocking up. Lots of choices, and sales to come...

What I was wondering was would a commercial potting soil work, without amending it or adding additional nutes if enough of it was used?

For example, say a 1 cubic foot bag of ORGANIC potting soil, which is approximately 6+ gallons of soil... would that be enough to feed a single plant from seed to weed without adding any additional nutes? It would be kept fairly small ~3 ft, and bushy from topping.

Some brands are better than others, but yeah. A friend of mine uses fox farm ocean forest indoors without adding anything. For a long outdoor grow I dont know though.

I think so have not tried it but heard others say it went ok.

I pre amend my soil with extra ewc and perlite for veg and for flower at minimum some bone meal.

I would add 2 tbsp bone meal per gallon and also 1 tbsp blood meal per gallon. That is the cheapest way I know of. For the first few inches of soil just use the potting soil so you do not burn the seedling.

If you have the bucks Rainbow Bloom Mix is great for flower, 2 tbsp per gallon.
