Philips contempo floodlight good for growing?

hey all,

Got a chance to buy one of either two of these Philips contempo flood lights (links below)

Anyone used these and can offer any info regarding heat, power saving, what bulbs can be used...as much info as possible as I may be able to buy one of them for only $100 almost brand new.

Basically can I use them for growing?

They are pretty neat and would grow things, but for the money I would steer clear. They look to be a mh/hps core and coil ballast at either 250w/400w depending on model and that will work for horticulture. The issues I see with these units are the directional reflectors(meant to project outwards from a wall) and having the ballast and bulb in one unit with no easy way to cool. You could turn them into remote ballast and run open bulb or whatever hood you choose.

I found some 400w mh outdoor lamps and turned them into remote ballasts. After I bought the plug ends and replacing the capacitors, crimp connectors, wires and horticulture bulbs I would have been better off leaving them in the garbage and using my time and money towards something meant for this hobby.

I would save the money and use it towards a digital ballast, air cooled reflector and inline fan.

It says right in the literature on those lamps for "horticultural lighting"

Depending how cheap your talking about just hang the whole fixture and go for it

Hmm, ok two diff opinions here now I'm indecisive. If I can buy one for $100 I think it's worth it, plus the second link seems ideal as it takes both mh and hps plus can run either 250w or 400w. My grow area is small at 2ftx2ftx4ft.

Bare in mind this is for sale in my own country and super hard to find grow lights unless bought from eBay. Plus shipping just crazy price to my country as we are so far from any other countries. Postage almost cost as much as the lights.
