You can build a soil from scratch but it's much easier and less effort imo to simply recycle the soil you already have over & over eventually creating a kind of super soil. Only trouble is you need a source for good quality compost & red wiggler worm castings kick serious ass...Best thing you can do to start is to start up a worm bin; then you can let the worms make your compost for you out of your organic kitchen scraps. It takes time to get it established but after awhile you can harvest fresh worm castings every few weeks.
Then every time you harvest a plant just drop the root ball into a large tote bin or similar vessel, hydrate it & add in your fresh compost along with whatever soil amendments you choose. Maybe add some coco coir and perlite to loosen it up and toss lightly with a shovel. Hydrate as needed to keep moist and give AACTs to get the microbial party rockin. Let it set for a month to "cook" everything in & then it's ready for another cycle. Your mix will get even better every time you recycle it.
After a few recycles your mix will be rich enough to get plants through almost your entire grow giving your plants just plain water. In the meantime give AACTs to help keep the soil in your containers supernaturally active which makes for super healthy & happy plants.
