so i have an old hydrofarm 1000watt ballast with hood and bulb i bought about a year ago and never used. I just finished building my room with a 50 amp panel.

BUt i decided to open up the ballast just to see the condition and there are some wires that come from the power cord that are roasted to the bone inside the ballast

I can easely re wire the rosated wires no problem but I want to get some thoughts what do u guys think?

I have turned it on before and it made a really loud buzzing but worked

Please advise

I would try it but be careful!! it may have melted the wires from yrs of use & I have seen a few like that after 10-15 yrs use but it could also be a sign of a problem. keep an eye on the wiring. inspect it weekly or more. might be worth leaving the case open so you can eyeball it every time you walk by it.

[/IMG] ok lets see if this works here is a pic!
If thats oxidation im looking at, no. its not safe.
It will not conduct energy properly, and will be hotter then it should.
Your risk of melting and fire also are 10 fold increased over oxidized wiring.

To remake that unite, if the parts are not oxidized - capacitor, etc as i cant see em.
you could simply replace the "wires" for real cheap and eliminate the above mentioned
risks.

In its current state, no its not safe.
