hps is old tech, but it works, reliably. use it myself for now, saving up to go with strips and QB mix.
Hps is old tech, but its also tried and true. Cheap to buy an garenteed results. Cooling them is easy because the whole industry is built around them.
With leds you need the cutting edge tech for them to be worth anything, and theres no such thing as a ducted led fixture. And they create heat dont let yourself be fooled.
It would cost around 1500$ to get leds to compete on par or better than a 1kw hps. That same hps would cost 300$ for top of the line hood, ballast, and bulb. And another 200 for all the fans and ducting youll need. Leaving yourself 1000$ to cover your power bill for the next year minimum.

Not true man. i use 6 inch Rvks and they are plenty for my 4x4 and 3x3 tents.
Ugh.. ok well having used both 6 inch and 8 inch fans i can tell you and anyone else that a 8 inch is always going to do a better job cooling a 1000 watt light and do it quieter. If you want it to run slower just hook it up to a speed controller.

6 inch fans are not good, 6 inch duct restricts airflow too much around bends.

Dont think your using a 1kw hps in that 3x3 tho.. so not sure what your arguing about.

Whos arguing? You said the 6inches dont move enough air and im simply saying they do and can be used no problem and are quiet aswell

Ok well.. the recommendation is to only use 6 inch fans on lights 600 watts and smaller. And to use 8 inch and larger for 1000 watt light. Thats just standard industry practice. You can do whatever you want but you probably shouldnt dish that advice out to others.

a 6 inch fan will cool a 600, but that's pushing it. i'm using a 6 inch to cool a 400 and a 600 and it's falling behind now that its getting hot out, i'm seriously thinking about upgrading to an 8 inch fan. my only problem is that the only place i have to vent is a pre-existing 4 inch dryer vent.

There is a Ducted Led ... ChilLED

Powerful led systems ( vitali and Growmaus)
Ducted Cooling | Fan Cooling | Liquid cooling / Water cooling

These are not Chinese bullshit lights ... Was looking hard at these before I jumped on quantum... Maybe still will grab a module.

Heres the problem tho, the only leds that interest me are the current gen ones and a fixture that size for me, would need to be pushing close to 1000 watts to light a 5x5 area. This is a rare case i think to find one that is ducted, an a good start. But theres still a LONG way to go before led is a really viable choice imo
