No-till newb, can't get these deficiencies sorted.

Hey RIU,
I pulled the trigger and bought everything to start growing no-till

I used the No-till revisted recipe

1:1:1: CSPM (Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss) : Pumice/Lava rock : Compost - Malibus B/U is an excellent choice if it is available in your area.

Amended per cuF with:

1/2 - 1 cup Neem or Karanja
1/2 - 1 cup Kelp
1/2 - 1 cup Crab/Crustacean meal
1 cup MBP (Malted Barley Powder)

1/2 cup Gypsum (nice sulphur source)
4-6 cups Basalt
6-8 cups Biochar

In my starter containers I put 1/3 of this mix on bottom and 2/3 of Canna Terra potting mix in starter pots..plants are showing all sorts of deficiencies..leaves yellowing, vibrantly red stems, I've grown both these phenos and red/purple stems are not the norm.

Original Skunk is the clone, and Candy Creme is the seedling.. I already took some badly yellowed leaves off the clone.

Should I just up pot them now into my main veg container with 100% No-Till mix? Should I apply a Tea? I don't really know. Input appreciated.

you should have started with with the mix in the whole container. using the canna terra did you in because it doesn't have any amendments. so 2/3 of your medium has no food for the plant whatsoever; only the bottom third does. yeah i would transplant them for sure. they look like they're in a pretty small container, started from seed, and have been in there for several weeks. definitely transplant.

you were likely concerned with starting them in the no-till mix from seed and didn't want to overdo it, which is understandable. but it would have been better to dilute it with the terra mix say 50/50 than putting 1/3 in the bottom.

also, for your next mix, just go with 1 cup per cu.ft. of the rock dust, no need to go more than that. the recipe you're using is slightly outdated imo.

Yeah what @shulby said.

I keep some base mix (peat/pumice/compost) before the amendments for seedlings/clones. It has the benifical microbes and some nutes. Plus you would already have it on hand.

Transplant into full mix and should look better in about week or less.

Thanks Schluby and Stoned. I was totally scared of nute burning my plants, next seedlings I'll try diluting.

I went ahead and transplanted everything into 10gallons, and am currently brewing up a casting tea.

Schluby, Stoned, and any other no-till experts can you fill me in on your soil mix?

Whats your opinion on casting teas, foliars, etc? I was applying foliar sprays 2 times a day once I started showing deficiency.. Any ideas why this wouldn't help fix the problem, or prevent it from getting so bad?

The more research I do the more misinformation I seem to end up with. A lot of opinions out there and not many facts, it makes learning this style of growing a challenge.

I just quickly copied the recipe out of the No-Till revisted thread as that was my starting point, but I ended up slightly different. The exact recipe I used is as follows, any input is super appreciated!

20 Gal 1/3 canna terra
20 Gal 1/3 vulcanite
20 Gal 1/3 Gaia green worm castings

6 cups Neem Seed
8 cups kelp meal
8 cups gypsum
8 cups basalt
8 cups oyster shell flour
8 cups crab shell meal
4 cups malted barley

I used 32 cups of Glacial Rock Dust as well in the mix total, dont know exact ratio there.

recipe is fine other than the GRD. no need to do more than 1cup per cu.ft. of soil. shit lasts a long ass time. Malted barley topdressings will be necessary in flower because the stuff breaks down really quickly, and the recipe you use lacks potassium (the barely is your source, but it doesn't last long). just be prepared to do a couple topdressings, one in early flower, and one early-mid flower.

I think where true organics get confusing is that you aren't feeding the plant your feeding the microbes.
Worm casting or compost tea add these microbes, your amendments and plants feed microbes, microbes feed the plant.

Top dressing is a good thing cause it allows you to change what nutes are available in your soil at the right time.

I would just read through some of these threads in organics. Check the stickies out. Also read teamng with microbes by jeff lowenfels. Pretty easy to grasp book.

I use the nectar for the gods foliar feed, and they recommend feeding it twice a week. twice a day seems like a lot. but maybe youre recipe calls for it more often.

I potted up into my 10 gallon pots and they started bouncing back in hours.

Poor girls we’re just hungry. Chalk it up to a learning experience.

Yeah I understand the idea of it, just sooo much info to learn and a lot of misinformation.

Thanks for the info, I’ll definitely check the book out.
