My very own crappy UFO grow

G'day!

This is my very own, old-timey low-ish budget and semi-stealth grow using the crappiest of crappy cheepo chinese led's. Woot!

So i did a few grows under very different circumstances several years ago with a 400w... then had an alarming "trust" issue and have missed it like long-lost boobs ever since :(

I have a new location now but still have a need for occasional stealth when certain rello's etc visit at Chrimbo, so i built me a box, just over a meter tall/wide/long which doubles as a work bench/materials box for my crafty projects, which triples as some shit so boring to most folk that they will lose interest as soon as i start droning on about my dull hobbies. The fools!

I had next to no budget, a most trusted friend lent me some cash for the crappy lights and the box was made of left over tongue and groove flooring and some timber that was lying around. No pics of the outside of the box- you never know!

I got leds due to lack of height, and lack of initial funds for extraction of heat from HIDS (i'll get extraction over the next couple of weeks). They have 216w's of bulbs each so maybe in reality about 80w-100w each? i have 3 at the mo, another on the way soon, and then 2 red 125 cfls to be borrowed later as well. They were initially raised under household cfls.

The little babies are 8 Ball Kush from Barneys - picked due to their low advertised height, and good experiences with their Morning Glory way back when. Obvs since buying them i came across the less than stellar online rep they now enjoy.
Yeak, i know. Enough typie-typie.

First the dreaded blurple:

so, yeah, four plants. It's my first time in coco (previous grows were soil) and one got killed, i think via an over feed when just a seedling. Been "a bit" of an adjustment from soil grows.

These were all planted from seed on the sixth october iirc, so about a month old.

So these were potted up into their final pots in 2 separate batches. They are in big pots (up to about18L) as i often go away for 2 or 3 nights.

They have a little nute burn in some lower leaves as i adjusted to the inert medium. Current feeds are just cal-mag and formulex (i planned to get some veg food but *i think* the formulex seems fine).

These 8 Ball Kush are a pure indica and i've only grown indica/sativa hybrids before - their short internodal length has made me be a bit more cautious in LST'ing them but they are now all under my thumb to various degrees. One actually had a fim attemp, but i think i under-did it, will try to put another pic of it up later.

The lonesome seedling is a San Fernando Valley Kush that was a freebie, hoping to get some cuts off of it in a few weeks (i have a cfl mother cupboard in the making) and then maybe keep this as a 12/12 zone, and move over to a more SOG-like arrangement. Hopefully i can get good cuts off these 8 Balls too.

Yar, and these obvs grew slower than i was used to under a HID, and i may veg for between 2-4 more weeks before i flip.

Been an interesting experiment so far, busy reading about COBS in the meantime for future ref :dunce:

I think that covers it, ta for reading :)

Nice little grow my dude! Nothing wrong with cheapo LEDs if that's what you can afford. I ran a mars 600 for a long time before I fell into the lighting nerd wormhole.

What happened to the unlucky girl that passed away?

Yep, even though it aint as potent as an HPS, i'm pleasantly surprised so far, within reason.

The dead one never got beyond the seedling stage, a bit of a bummer, but valuable lesson learned - kinda encouraged me to pop the SFV Kush which i was gonna save for round 2 as such.

If that is the same beautiful cheap ass UFO I used for my project "150W UFO" you are drawing about 49W from the wall
View attachment 3825116

The UFO's i have are "216w" via the bulbs so different from yours i guess - i expected them to draw about a third to a half of that. I'm considering adding some household cfls while i veg, may speed things up a bit and make stuff "bluer". Hopefully by flowering i should have an estimated 500w or more of draw in there (4 ufos and 2 x 125 cfls), which should be ok for a meter square footprint.

At least the ufo's were cheap (under £30 a piece), and if they turn out crap for flowering then i can re-plan and use them for veging or supplemental light in future.

I couldn't find your 150 UFO thread btw... what were your opinions of them?

It was this beauty

I didnt flower a full run of cannabis under it. I tore it apart and changed the spectrum. You can see how it does in the Party Cup Thread

So a very belated update.. a 250w hps became available to me, so i took it and added it to the three cheapo ufos, which tbf were doing a good job..

Then the fans broke on 2 of them, and despite my hamfisted fiddling around with them they remained that way - i suspect the motors burned out while i was away one weekend.

They were veged a week longer than i wanted as the friend who helped me start up via equipment and cash needed a fair few cuttings - luckily these were easily attained as these 8-balls (and the sole San Fernando Valley Kush) were trained (3 were topped as well) and they were turning into beasties. The SFV Kush stretched considerably less btw.

By this point they had stretched more than expected (prior to the flip), and this continued once i flipped - i reckon that they doubled in size which was a pita as i chose them as they were meant to be bloody short considering the small space i wanted them in.

Then one of the ufo's died entirely... sooo i managed to pull a favour and got hold of another 250watter. Now they be entering week 4 after the flip, under 2x250w hps and 2xufos (216w of bulbage), fed with vitalink bloom (they finished veg in vitalink grow too) as well a Nutrifield Crystalic and Bud Burst. First two weeks after the flip they were just on "grow" due to all the family stuff and travel going on at xmas.

The box they are in is way too short now and i'm just bodging it really, going well enough considering the limitations - this is essentially a starter grow to get me going again. Pics should be posted underneath...

As you can see, one got a burn going too close to the lights, i'm often away for three nights or so and the stretch on the 8-balls surprised me. Got a lot of heads and a reasonably even canopy, so i'm not put out :)

Cheers! Got a few challenges/experiments yet. It aint totally pitch black in the room the box is in but i suspect this is not an issue (no direct light, v v dark in the box, consistent etc), still no extraction, the plants are too big for the box which kinda makes odour control via extraction a question i cant answer yet, plus hugely dense foliage in the under carriage... i'm watching things closely though. Essentially i hope just another clip on fan for the underworks and then keeping the room open in the day and not opening my front door for the next five or six weeks should sort it.
I'd rather not trim the undercanopy if poss, then i can harvest the tops and give everything else a couple more weeks while the cuttings i'll get in return for the ones i donated grow a bit.
Biggest issues will be smell and controlling humidity etc to avoid rots i reckon
