My plants are presexing under 24/0?

So my first ninja indoor grow is underway as an experiment.

So anyway, It has been exactly one month today since my plants broke topsoil from 3 random seeds. The smallest (height, and thickness wise) scraggliest one of the bunch is the plant in which I need advice on. It has suffered the most early life leaf burn, from the perlite mix soil I got at Home Depot. It seems to be developing pods near the top most nodes suggesting this is a male plant, though all the information I have been able to find online about the process for determining the sex of your plant, consistently says that this can only happen once you switch the lights to 12/12 for a couple of days, and the sex organs will start to develop.

The thing is... the plants have been on 24/0 since they broke soil...So I'm not really sure If this is a male as it is my first grow, I have looked at a bunch of pictures on the internet but I am still not 100% due to lack of experience. If anyone would be able to give my plants a indentification it would be much appreciated! Also if someone would be able to explain to me why this is happening since I keep reading over and over plants don't develop gender while they remain under 24/0. The lack of information about 24/0 presexing is making me nervous about pulling it before I'm 100% sure. This is my first time ever growing halp a noob.

You can see in the third picture beneath my LST string that it looks like 4 balls are growing out of this particular node?

Hey buddy all plants will preflower. It is how you tell sex before the flip to 12/12. If you started from seed they will do it between the 4th-9th nodes. If clones they should have female preflowers already. Hopefully atleast that is.

But from what I see it does kinda look like some balls under their. It is kinda hard from your picture to tell. If they come out looking like bannanas or Ice cream cones then its a girl. If its footballs you gots a boy! If your having trouble telling right now give it a couple days and they will get bigger and easier to see!

What kind of lights are you using?

i'm not seeing any obvious signs of sex, although if i had to put money on it i'd say boy. i've not seen a lot of early early male pollen sacs developing which is what i think you think your seeing. unless they have the autoflowering trait its unlikely they will show sex during 24 hours of light. you might wanna knock it down to 18, bit of darkness helps ur plants roots develop

i'm only saying boy because it looks a bit stretchy, how far away are your lights? what kinda lights u using?

Lols I laughed when I read this. Maybe take into say what he says about the light but the plant part is crap!

Dude have you not heard of preflowering?? All plants will show sex when they are naturally mature in veg!

I'd still give it more time, Iv seen female preflowers develop like that and then all of a sudden shit out a pair of pistils. Give it more time man.

This is the only one thats stretchy out of the three, and the only one that has leaf burn. I was thinking of knocking it down to 18/6, but they other 2 are doing so well under 24/0 I wasn't sure. This little guy here though has his own helper lamp clipped to him with 100watt equiv cfl directly into the stem growth. There are about 5 more cfls with mix of soft and orange about 4 inches above em that are zipped tied to my tent. They are spread evenly so that all 3 plants share the lumen from all the lights. I think I shall give it more time thank you for the advice so far! very helpful. Perhaps they will start shooting out pistils in a little bit. I was concerned because the other two show absolutely no preflowering signs and are much bigger and bushier, but the time must be getting close then.

K how far are your cfls, the plant looks like it has been streching for the light bad. Cfls can be within 2-6 inches and not burn a plant!

He probably is stretching for the light bad because the other two are like twice as big and the cfls are like 2 inches above them! That's why I gave him the clamp light too see if s/he can soak up a few extra rays as a helper.

i've never seen pre-flowers no, i've seen the little two green pistil-like things 90' round from the nodes, but never pre-flowers that actually indicated sex. i try to give advice based on what i've actually seen. are preflowers 100% accurate? and are there any on the plants in the pics?

you'll do well to remember that we are all on here to learn. i'm sure theres gaps in ur knowledge. treating people like that aint cool man, you'd best hope i dont see you make a mistake cause i will rip u apart for it, thats all that acting big on here will get you

Yea this one wasn't continueing to split off in the 2 leaf growth at the nodes, it looked like a cluster of 4 little oval things in the pic there's those 2 on one side, and 2 on the other side, it just looks like a male flower cluster...I am just a noob it's all good. Just trying trying to understand what I'm seeing, based on me teaching myself to grow. Someone said pistils could shoot outta them so I guess maybe I'll grow em for another week or two and start the flower process.

on my first grow i thought i had all girls based on them and ended up with 3 blokes. there are enviromental factors that can cause plants to switch sex, its rare, but does happen. even plants in flower can hermy. i've learned a lot from this forum but its always best to search and double check the info your given.
the search engine on the site is improving but i prefer to use google just type your search into google and end it with Rollitup ie awesome bud pic rollitup

not sure if its 4,6,8 week mark you'll need to have a check, but u can throw your lights into 12/12 till your plants show sex then get them back into veg. As far as i know its the best way to check

I don't know why you would veg for 8 weeks then flower then return to veg just to find out the sex, a lot of time would be wasted.
Flip them to 12/12 when you want to, then within 2 weeks you will know what is what. Toss the males, and hopefully you have one or more ladies still in the game.
Or you can wait the 6-12 weeks from seed to see the preflowers. If you're growing with cfls, then you might not want to be veging that long without training the plant, as the CFL won't penetrate the canopy.

Pre-sexing is perfectly normal under any amount of veg lighting schedule be it 16/8, 18/6, 20/4, 24/0
given enough veg time. Pre-flowers can form from 4weeks onwards. The 3rd pic looks male to me but I would wait it out a couple more days to be sure.

VanishingToaster - no offence intended but try to refrain from giving out duff info without using your google search first to clarify. As some of the advice you give you out is a bit dubious. If you're unsure it's better to wait for someone with more knowledge to answer first that way you don't get dumped all over by forum members.


I would just like to say one thing which is try not to flip to 12/12 to show sex and then revert back. This can have a serious effect on the plant. If you feel the need to sex the plant before it shows you then you can cover up one branch on the plant for 12 hours of darkness during your vegging time. However if you have multiple plants growing from seed each time the you should just germ more than you need and grow them to the height you need flip the lighting time and fish out the males.

Perfect answer bro. I only have one thing to add. Instead of covering one branch as that can be a Bitch, You could always take a clone or 2 and introduce them straight to 12/12 they will start the transformation before they are even rooted, that way your not causing to much stress overall to the plant. Hey and if they are girls by the time they show fully they will be rooted and you gots more. Lols have fun

Didn't say about the whole clone way (easiest and less stressful) because most new growers don't have 2 areas for growing like the rest of us lol.

Personally if I wanted 4 females I would generally germ 7 seeds OR just use feminised beans from a reputable breeder.

Preflowers are a 100% accurate way to sex a plant, if you veg a plant for long enough it'll be covered in tiny little pistils.

Full, healthy preflowers are also a sign the plant is mature enough to flower to its full potential, this is something most people neglect in their rush to flower as quickly as possible.

Your answer is right in front of you- a predominance of reds (SOFT WHITES and ORANGE) will cause early sexing. This would probably not happen if you were heavy Cool Whites.

Probably time to cut back to 20/4- 18/6- 13/11...
