Malt Extract For Barley Sst?

So in using barley in soil mix, I picked up a 1lb bag from local brewer supply myself and top-dressed last time around for the hell of it. I was going to use the left over barley from that in the new soil mix I put together but was uncertain if it was even worth bothering since it had been 4-5+ weeks since I purchased it and they did the 'cracking' of it with the mill in the store to help sort of activate things; I didn't end up using it since I figured I had let it sit too long to be worth bothering with. Plus as cheap as it was, I'd just go get fresh if I thought it was vital.

What type of 'shelf life' would you all think applies to barley, especially once cracked...

That’s a good question,I don’t think it would hurt to add it but I agree that the fresher it is the better it would be.

Once cracked, it's a pretty short shelf life.

What most do, is buy uncracked and run what you are going to use right then through a $12 coffee/spice grinder. The uncracked malted barley has a fairly long shelf life of a year or 2. Cracked, it's down to a couple of days or so.

That is exactly what I do, big bag of malted barley seed, ground up right before use in a coffee grinder. Top dressing in veg and mixed with water every 10-14 days. I don't know if it helps or not, does not seem to hurt as all my flowering plants are praying up to the COBs. and look pretty good at 15 days into 12\12.
