Letting our government take our freedoms away each passing year, paying for wars that help the rich, bailing out failed companies that helped ruin the economy in the first place, eating probably the most unhealthy food made up by modern man...doesn't seem that smart. But then again, I cant think of an age where greed did not rule the world.

Short answer : YES we are much smarter..
why, because of the simple fact that we NOW!! have more opportunity to test andresearch ideas.. … the difference between stupidity and pure genius is theability to make your hypothesis a fact… a person with an 8 grade education nowcould go back in time 1000 years and be thought of as a witch, Or a god…..edit: I might have reach too far with that last statement ….. withall the “ism’s” I the word today I wouldstill say we as a planet are much closer then we was 2000 years ago.. and beingopen minded , and willing to learn from other different from us is what hasadvanced every major nation,,, sure you could still ideas,, but are willingnesstoday to work with “others” to improve upon ideas. is what makes us smarter thanour past selves ….nations with diverse cultures seems to be much furtheradvance tech wise…. ..its funny how we love hybrid everything except people.

Just because we have intellectual resources that are built from other peoples previous work and experiences doesn't make us smarter or more intelligent than the people that came before us... It would just make us better informed...

What is smart but processing information? Seeing the bigger picture. The question for me is how can we know? As cn suggests we are only measuring smarts by as smart as we are.

We haven't been keeping records very long, and like climate data, it is suspect. So, we are only just now beginning to understand how important record keeping is. But, we are always changing our ideas on what is important to measure.

This idea is that by having more technically complex information, perhaps we are growing our ability to absorb information and process it to less hideous outcomes.

Just take a google gander at a few things.

Hole in the Wall Project, where kids in rural India that have never seen one, are exposed to a hardened computer through a hole in the wall. Every little village has a brick Post Office. That the level of their tech. No one instructs these kids, they are only observed.

No running water, no electricity, except for the govt generator at the Post Office. The advanced business boy, uses the hole in the wal of the Universe to figure out that an alternator and bicycle will charge a car battery and he can sell charges for the cell phones and get exercise all day.

Also, check out the rate of technical leap frog in un-developed countries. They are not putting down land lines. Cell towers only.

So, us Western centric smug-oids, need to stick our heads out of the hole in the wall. Just because American youth are so under-educated from birth, doesn't mean that for the ROW. Kids in Asa are forced to study and they will eat our lunch, technically.

I think the rich people on top have gotten a lot smarter.

In the past there were slaves that worked because well...they were slaves. Then countless times in history slaves have rose up and taken back their freedom.

Today the government has convinced us that doing well in life is "being busy". Ask someone how they are doing, they usually respond "good" or "fine", but then follow with "keeping busy" or "been really busy at work", and we say that is a "good thing". Lots of work, keep on producing, just produce produce produce.

This is the same thinking as most Chinese people. I lived there a couple years ago and spoke some basic mandarin and the proper response to "how are you?" is "I am busy" or "working hard and busy".

Flash forward now and my small business is finally where I like it, I now work about 1/3 of the time and I am so happy I dont have to go to my old job, which was 50-60hrs a week. I still cant believe I wasted my life like that to produce what I think isnt even worth producing, yet my family was so proud, go figure.

Now when people ask me "how are you doing?", I say "working 20hrs a week and using the rest of the time to enjoy life."

I definitely could work 40 or 60hrs on my business, but why? To buy a bigger house? A cottage that I can use....2 months a year? I dont give a shit about that stuff or trying to be super well off to impress my friends. Some of them are rich and they are just ignorant pricks sometimes. Nice guys, but fucking egos on them. Anyways, yeah I think the rich and the people on top have convinced us and the Chinese that keeping busy making mostly useless shit is cool.

It comes down to People are SCREWED (at this point) as a society in general.

We have such a variance in ideas, beliefs and culture... and damn it.. we WANT others to not only feel the same way we do.. we want to share our experiences with each other.. and at some times FORCE it on them.


If we can somehow manage NOT to do the above we might make it (and I honestly dont see this happening in time soon nor can I see how it would be done)
It is hard wired into us to want to share and have things shared be it food or knowledge we also "click in" with our own.. Here even on these forums by us by me.. we kinda have this desire to either want to help or get help and by doing this we subject ourselves (willing or unwilling) to the others ideas and beliefs.


BUT we also do have some pretty cool shit that happens and some pretty horrid ones...

Think of it this way...there are smarter smart people now, but our dumber people are getting dumber...Simply because smart people usually make babies with other smart people and dumb people the same...Every once in awhile someone dumb hooks up with someone smart and we get average kids...but they are more average than they used to be...
Smart parents have kids and then teach the kids their smarts, so those kids are smarter than their parents, and then those smart kids grow up and find someone else smart and they have a child that they teach all their smarts to, so now this kid is smarter than a long line of already smart people...so on and so forth...
I don't think brain power is a fluke and some kids are smart and some aren't. I think if your parents are dumb then you will be too...if they are average, you might be smart, but not as smart as the kids with 2 smart parents.

So we have smarter smart people and dumber dumb people, and average-ier average people as time goes on...this is my hypothesis.

Ya know, I am out to get as much knowledge about everything as I can possibly gather, but I also want to share this knowledge with others, but there are so many people that would rather think what they think, and not have to entertain any other ideas...where as, I personally want to entertain all the ideas at once...
You know the type of people that agree with something they know nothing about? I hate that! Then there are the people that disagree with something they know nothing about and that pisses me off too...I meet very few people that want to know things just for the sake of knowing them...
I want to meet someone that I can talk about mammals, and religion, and science and whatever inanity pops in my head...I would love it if they too thought thoughts about things that are inconsequential...
My husband is the I don't know about it so it isn't true type person, and we got into a huge fight the other night because he hadn't heard of antimatter...and I just thought it was a neat thing that everyone should know about...and he got all mad, telling me he is tired of "my conspiracy theories"...oh yeah douchebag I just made up antimatter to annoy you...

I am never offended by others knowledge, the issue is that a lot of people just parrot back whatever they have been told or taught, and what if you were a smart kid born to average parents, so you think average ideas while that big brain you have is just wasted telling people about things that aren't true...
