I'm troubled by mean people on this forum

  • I have received a tremendous amount of information and help from members on the RUI forum. I honestly, really appreciate it, and whenever I do have a positive insight, I share it.

What I don't understand is why some members feel the need to be so fucking rude. Critical input, advice, pointing out what a person is doing wrong, all good. But implying that someone is an idiot for asking a question diminishes the reputation and effectiveness of the entire RUI forum.

I know that there are bad seeds who post crazy shit, just ignore it. Chances are, they want you're reaction and are phishing.

When someone seems a total newbie and has basic questions, I think we should help them out, not, as some people on this site do, call them stupid and insult them.

I've learned that the smart people on RUI, with useful knowledge and input, are polite and have a sense of humor. The assholes, even if they are genius growers, rarely contribute anything but spew.

Lighten up folks. I think we all want to learn, and to increase the knowledge and success of our members. Why not?

I try to be as helpful as I can but some people ask mind boggling things.
Just an example, not singling anyone out.

"Why is my plant turning into crisp when my 1000W HID is 1 inch from the bulb? I have a fan on it..."

well thought out questions with pics that aren't answerable by google search in .4sec asked by a polite newb will get the most positive responses I feel :)

Some times it's hard to get a good google search if you don't know what your looking for, or how to ask it,
I've knowticed people have been getting meaner and meaner by the day I made my account cuz every seemed nice on here for the most part, but now some times it's just like' why would you go out of your way to put some one down who is in need of help?"

What most people seem to forget
Is the dumbest questions are the ones that don't get asked,
Appreciate the fact some is trusting you for advice wether it work or not

That's the web in a nutshell: people will happily type stuff they'd NEVER say. I agree that it's worse here though, which is why I come and go. I like helping shorten the learning curve for others but there seem to be a lot of people who post stuff that shows they've read a lot but haven't actually grown much themselves. Given the subject matter of this forum, that's understandable. It doesn't excuse it, but it's understandable.

After a while you'll figure who is full of shit and who knows what they're talking about. If the answer to someone's question is dead-ass obvious or could be found with a google search, I just ignore it. I've figured out a comfortable regime that works pretty well for me and the girls but I still read WAY more than I post.
I don't see a need to rip on a newb for asking a question for the thousandth time: we have too much opposition from the mainstream to be attacking each other, but that's just me. I'm firmly in the "overgrow the government" camp.

I get that there are trolls and douch bags regardless of Internet or not, but it just seems about unsessisary. Kinda one of those if you don't got nothing nice to say don't say nothing, I get there are some reducualsly dumb questions. But if i think i might have an answere to point them in the right direction ( with what little knolage i have) im definitly gojng to try to help some one dosent know jack shit there question is probably ganna come off as dumb

But yeah don't take the first suggestion some makes to hart, use there idea as a cross reference and compare to other answeres, find what works for you your plants and your set up ,every ones is different,
So not all advice is good advice,

You know what would be helpful?

Its a random thought, at 4:44 am- so dont expect it to be well thought out.

What if every time someone attempted to create a thread, the website PRE SEARCHES the forum for the THREAD TITLE, displays it on another page that allows you to peruse through the search results before committing to making that thread. It would stop people from posting before searching, and also help people who may have missed a particular thread.

I believe there should be user friendly prompts that guide us through the process, quick and easy though. People who are familiar -.... eh I give up, not enough brain power to be interested in solving this. Sorry.

I agree with the OP. This forum isnt very nice to people sometimes. But whats really annoying is useless posts that have no bearing on the discussion at hand. forum Nazis are always trying to do the whole UTFSE thing, when ive already done my rssearch and just need advice from individuals with personal experience or informed opinions. Whew.

Love to rollitup but even an admin laughed at me after asking how to post a picture for the mobile version of the site.(turns out u gotta open up the full version page and then u can access attach ments)

Typical question that provokes discourtesy:
"I am a new grower - How much yield can I grow in a space 4' x 3' ???"

There is3 or 4 of these EVERY DAY and not one comes from a serious intention to grow.
They are from a stoned kid who'll forget to read the answers.

Fuck 'em

I made a account year several years ago, but only began actually posting just recently. I spent all that time lurking around absorbing information and not wasting time asking the same questions that have been answered already. Now that I have a solid grasp on most of this I have decided to return the favor by helping out. Paying it forward if you will.

I know that not everyone will look for a answer before posting, but thats fine with me. It keeps the forum from stagnating with a constant flow of new threads. Sure the answers are right around the corner, but I have come across new information that was probably regurgitated one time or another. To me it's all about helping each other out. I get a sense of accomplishment from others success.

Me too.
If someone is asking after posting lots of details about their grow, I will answer even the most basic of questions.

Finding answers can be harder than it seems.
Recently I attempted to research LED grow lights and I ended up with more confusion than clarity.
I had to button hole some regulars with PM's to even start to understand them!
and it is just a start....!

Fuck it, I didnt come here lookin for the Mr Nice Club. I came here for information and I am usually able to find it here. Amongst a lot of bullshit and a few assclowns there are some people that really know their shit and especially early on in my quest for knowledge I very much needed that assistance.
This site and a few others like it taught me how to grow good enough to produce shit better than anything I've EVER bought on the street.
Now, with half a dozen or so grows under my belt I'm no expert but I've learned a ton of shit along the way and I'm happy to share any of that with someone who is where I was a couple years ago and wants to grow but wants to try to do it right.
So you see, I get what I come for.
Fuck the rest, it doesn't matter.

^ This. People coming in straight from a google search tend to think they can ask questions like they would on redit or yahoo questions, where they get answers back almost immediately. The other part of the problem is the search engine on here really does suck, the refinement on searches needs to be much better or the process for starting threads (not posts) in certain rooms needs to use more specific required fields (which will allow better searches, even sorting capabilities on viewing rooms and search results).

Example, to set up a smoke report:

Strain Name - required (could be a drop down, with other for unlisted strains)
rating dropdown

or for plant help you make it more like a trouble ticket with a few required fields like:

Light: (dropdown - sun, mh, hps, led, combo, blah,)
Medium: (dropdown - coco, soil, blah, blah)
Issue: (description)

Searches would be much easier to refine, also makes it more difficult and less likely to have 10 questions to the same problem day in day out with just one or two required fields. Just my two cents. Most of the could be saved if the UI and searches where just optimized a bit on this site. Coming as a vet SE....this should not be a hard thing to do and relieve much of the butthurt and headache felt by the snobs and slobs alike.

Hmmm iv come across a few dickheads but most are cool.
and yeah i was under the impression that a site with a plant problems forum, would be used for people to ask for help when they needd it, however i understand the madding cycle of wanna bes forgetting they posted or asking dumb shit.

alot of people on this site use it as a facbook of weed site. Theyre burnt out on answering questions like " i want to grow weed, what do i do?" And believe me, ive seen alot of those, and actually helped more of them than id like to admit. Ive seen alot of threads like this one as well and i usually add the same comment to the whiney members who dont want to answer noobs questions. Dont do it, stick to your subscribed threads and dont answer the noobs because for all the noob questions i see just as many whiney ass members crying cause they have to see the same question a millon times as they hit "whats new" every five minutes. Waaaahhhhhhhhaaaaaaaa. Shut up, the sites created to help noobs so if ya dont like it GTFO. :):):)
