hey guys so im just about to start planting and preparing but i have a few problems, 1 http://www.hydrohobby.co.uk/digital-combo-nutrient-and-growroom-thermometer.html i think this is broken? i took it out the packet put a battery in and click reset and its saying my air temp is 27.5 and then when i put it right next to the extractor fan its saying 27.3? surely its cooling it down more than 0.2? also my humidity dial is saying its 65-70 and i was told 60 was the recommended humidity how do i get this down a little without spending loads?

also ph of my water is 7.6 apparently :s shall i get rain water?

YOu need to get yrself some PH down to lower yr PH, as for Humidity i wouldn;t worry about it being that little bit out, mine is never perfect and it never bothers me too much... as for yr digi thermometer thingy, i always keep about two other glass type thermometers in my room to cross reference the temps with and make sure my digi one is working correctly coz am so untrusting of digital stuff.

Oscillating fans don't really drop temperatures too much their purpose is to circulate air in a free flowing system. Also, oscillating fans strengthen stalks of plants. Cheapest way to drop your humidity without spending a boat load is to increase your ambient temperature. Higher temperatures translates to lower humidity.

Not always the case. Humidity isn't relative to temperature. That's like saying Florida has no humidity when in reality Florida is hot as shit and humidity is almost always 100% Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. You put a bowl of water in your grow room and the humidity will jump regardless of temperature.

Also, fans don't cool air. They move air.

So a bowl of salt outside the tent would help shim?

Rice would probably work better. I'd put it at the bottom of the tent. I dropped my phone in some water once, put it in rice for a couple days it was dry as a bone and worked 100%

My kid taught me that with my iPod. Worked perfect after 3 days in a bag of rice.

Cali is right about the fans, but if you have a window A/C unit, and run that, it will drop your humidity, that is just a by product we get out of the cooling effect. Just make sure the exhaust AND the drain are outside of your grow room, otherwise you will be fighting yourself.
If you look on Craigslist or Ebay, often you can find used A/C units or dehumidifiers, or try a goodwill store for a used dehumidifier, I doubt very seriously you would find an A/C unit there.
Also, if you go to an RV place, like Camping World, they have plastic deals that you can put silica crystals in. You could probably get the bowl and a couple bags of the refill for under $20.
They are good for an average room size and work great.

Go to a outdoor stores and get he silica. It's used to lower moisture in items when storing them like a boat. It will work wonders. If you Have a basspro shops around u they have it. I used to use in my boat under my boat cover when I stored it. Works well

This is what I was talking about.... Camping World
Work great, you can see the moisture as it collects in the lower bowl, and just as the crystals run out, the bowl is full.
