How far ahead do you plan your grows?

Some interesting replies. It seems I am not that ahead of the game. This is the first time I have really thought about planning ahead. I am resetting my grow, I have learnt so much from reading these forums and I am noticing a vast improvement in my weed. The Autos I grew outdoors this summer were superb, as good as anything I have smoked.

I used to grow 20 years ago and stopped about 10 years ago. Back then I did everything in a boarded out loft with 2 x 600w HPS.

I started growing again at the start of Covid as weed was getting hard to come by and I was bored. I kitted myself out with some COBS, a tent, some fans, Gro+ Soil mix and a tri pack of Old Timers. What can I say I got some weed.

I have now decided to up my game. I built a pair of 150w Quantum Boards ordering the parts direct from China following the advice of a friend. I am very impressed with the results. So I am building another pair. I have been given a full extraction setup by a friend, gotta get my head round that.

I have recently simplified my grow medium and yesterday found a source of locally produced compost and manure, for next to nothing, so that has to be figured out. I also discovered that Tomato feed works just as well as the fancy pants nutes I was using. So I am now going to investigate using dry amendments. Once I have a good dry amendment regime down I am going to give BluMat irrigation a go.

I have put my foot down with my wife. She is like a kid in a candy shop with strains. She always wants something new. So we might have 3 or 4 different strains on at a time and never the same one twice. So I have insisted that 50% of the grow will be the same strain every time, grown from clones and the other 50% can be grown from a single strain of her choosing, which she can change each time. I want to get consistency and have a staple go to all day smoke, so I have chosen White Widow x Big Bud and she has chosen Skywalker Haze for this time and Star Dawg for the time after that. I have invested in a pair 3x2x4 propagation tents.

It's all proper fun stuff, IMHO. It has taken me 18 months to get the most out of a cheapo setup from Amazon and eBay and I have. Now I want the next level. I am not happy with weed that is good for a hobby grower, I want weed as good as some of you guys on here produce.

I have a grow of 4 different strains flowering now, they have at least 4 weeks left. Once they are done I am going to strip the tent and sterilise all my gear. Then I am going to install the new lights and extraction system. The Wife has 4 different strains in one of the propagation tents that are about 4 weeks from seed now, so they will be 8 weeks old by the time the big tent is ready to go. I will pot them up, lolly pop them and tie them down. Then give them a couple of weeks of 18/6 to settle in and give me some time to make sure everything is working nicely. Then flip them. Once they are flipped I will start on the getting the White Widow x Big Bud going.

Sorry for the long ranty post, I am a bit stoned (that outdoor Blue Dream Auto I grew in the summer really is something nice) and I am trying to get it all planned out in my head. I think I am going to start making proper notes.

Thanks for all the great content on these forums. It really is a great resource.

Right now I'm flowering my last Kali Mist, vegging some Happiness, going to run Happiness a second time - clones this time, then Sour Diesel, then Blue dream.

That takes me to August 2022.

How long do seeds stay good for? Any extra steps like soaking an old seed?

There seems to be a lot of seed collectors on here - I've got beens back to 2000, including 4 bubblegum seeds I've been thinking of germing.

Kali Mist has a special place in my heart. Back in 2003 the wife and I walked all over Amsterdam to find some of that. In the end we got some in the Bluebird cafe. I hid 3g of it in my luggage. The first and only time I have smuggled some over an international border.

When we got back to the UK there had been some terrorist problem and there were Cops with guns everywhere and customs were bag searching every one. A cop asked me and my mate to go into the search room, when I got in there the room was completely empty, not a soul, so I ran and didn't look back.

Coincidentally I have some Happiness finishing now.

That is how I want to be. So I figure if I plan ahead now and get everything dialled in now, it will be a case of clean down, put in my pre vegged clones and my wife's selection and start up some more seeds and more clones.

luckily, being small time, there's nothing for me to really plan. The only thing I ever have to plan is when I start second/third plants space wise. Once I grow photos over summer, timing and space will become a bit more of an issue, but with Autos it's pretty straight forward as they can be staggered with no issues, and I've always got 1.6x1.6 tents for drying.

I'll just have to get used to timing and not staggering plants as i please, but still not much to plan with two or three plants max.

My main issue is always slow seedlings. I go through two weeks of "should I pop another or two just in case, this one seems a bit suss", but by week three everything's all good and like every other time, I blew everything out of proportion.

By the time I flip one space, I’m either taking cuts from one of my solo moms, or soaking some new beans. I like variety. Just growing a few out to gauge their stretch & feeding habits so I know what I can easily run concurrently in one space.
