This is an excellent approach. The light hits the plants at more angles since you have more points of emission. Add to that your getting great efficiency
Indeed. Plus less cooling required as individual chips don't get as hot and may last longer.
Modern DIY quantum boards or strip panels fully cash in on that and don't require bulky heat sinks anymore just a plate or some cheap U-profile.

any luxmeter will do as well (given you give your plants the same spectrum at the canopy top.) Quantummeters are mostly necessary to figure out the true PPFD values.
