Germinating seeds, root length before planting?

When germinating seeds, and the little root breaks out of the shell, what length should the little root get before planting in soil? I know you can do it at any point and the thing should grow, but I am wondering if there is an optimum length for best results.

Thanks to all who reply.

I planted 1 when the tap root was about 3/4 cm out, and another when it was just breaking out. I just planted the one with the short tap root a little less deep in the soil. No problem

Once you see the taproot emerge from the husk then you can transplant into medium of choice.
