Drilling holes in sides of pots

A fan will help dry the soil alittle quicker, as will higher temps. If you drilled the holes, you can transplant or cover them later. Plus, I hear air pruning is all the rage lately. I want to try it myself (you'll likely need to do a search for air pruning to understand that last bit)

i drill many holes into new pots . i feel this helps with air to the roots and helps my medium to dry quicker so i can feed em more often. also over watering and roots sitting in water is never a problem.

I usually drill two holes in my pots. One for the drain and one for the air stone. Much easier.

You have an airstone in your soil?
So i guess the consensus is that yes, it is ok to drill holes in the side of your pot for aeration. After having a quick look at that air pruning thing, then maybe its even a very good thing to drill holes in the side of your pots so root tips which reach the air die causing more roots to grow.

yes i take 5 gal buckets and drill a whole bunch of holes...

You are well on your way, nizmo. Most noobs would want the person to explain what air pruning (or whatever else) is...you did the research yourself and probably learned a lot more! Have some rep to start your path towards pot....

Thanks alot! I'm trying to learn as much as i can because my worst nightmare is spending all this time caring for my plants only to have something go wrong and screw it up! I'm sick of spending so much money on pot and i love growing it. I've done well in my last 2 grows. This time it's started off a little shaky but i knew what i did wrong and i'm pretty sure i wont be making the same mistakes again.
HappyGrowing86 - That's awesome. Still can't get over how tidy those plants are. Obviously you've mastered trimming and lst (which is what im trying for too).

I must say your plants are pretty amazing! Would you say that drilling those holes and the air pruning has a huge effect on your yields? Do you use CO2?

From what I have read through some links provided on a couple threads he posted on it was my understanding that was the purpose of the holes, that and to dry the soil faster and prevent over-watering. perhaps I misunderstood?

Ah yeah i see. It's all good, i guess it depends whether a layer of holes on the side of the pots constitutes air pruning... Not sure, but i think i'll be doing it with all of my grows from now on because after reading up on air pruning i can't possibly imagine how these holes could be a detriment!

Nizmo's right didnt say anything about air pruning. i think the number of holes i drilled in the pot let the soil dry out at a good rate . i think thats a big help because i fertilize every time i water.. i think the more regular you can get a feeding program the better it is for the plant.. also as frequently as you can without burning. during veg my soil drys in 2-3 days in smaller starter pots, during flowering the soil would dry in 3-4 days, and i would water them 1 gallon every time.. and when i consider the soil dry i mean almost no moisture in the top inch of soil.. as long as you dont see anything drooping.. i haven't used C02 on White widow like these plants but i have in the past, and i do strongly believe in helping rise C02 levels. the only problem with it is its hard to use very efficiently at all but it does help make the buds get fatter faster.. oh yea forgot to tell ya there is like 15 or so holes drilled in the bottom of my pots, and i raise them up on a couple 2 X 1's... any other q's?

and as far as air pruning goes.... i just pulled two root balls out of my pots, and where there are holes in the sides, the roots are only about 1/4 of an inch back in the soil, but seemed clustered around the holes back away from the light just barely into the soil,
it lookes to me like bunches of roots formed near the holes to breath... so if you look at it like that yes it could be air pruning...

Actually one thing that i was curious about was how you managed to keep pretty much every leaf on the plant nice and green right up until harvest. Im not sure exactly what stage they were at in the pictures, but they looked pretty close.
My other 2 grows, i had pretty extreme yellowing across the whole plant leading up to harvest (except for the small leaves poking out of the buds).
Do you add extra nitrogen to your feed during flower or something?

not really any extra nitrogen, but my soil ratio is 2 part potting mix, 1 part perlite, 1 part wiggle worm castings. so that probably helps some... the pictures you saw were about a week from harvest, and there was no yellowing of any leaves except for a few way under the canopy. those leaves would yellow and fall off in a matter of twelve hours.. the plant dropped the leaf very quickly. the amazing thing about there being no yellowing is that i stopped all nuts at week 5 of flowering, then used a half strength Gravity Flower Hardener solution for two waterings then just distilled water till the end and had no yellowing of any bud or top leaves. these were the healthiest plants i have ever had... my last harvest did have some yellowing a week or two following up o harvesting.. heres some pics of that
