hello I am currently growing under a CFL bulb for one plant but am wanting to but a grow kit that includes a 400W MH and a 400W HPS bulb. however I don't know whether or not to buy the kit that come wit the wing reflector or buy the one that comes with the cool hood. which is better? if I use the cool hood how do I set up the ventilation system. if I use the wing reflector how do I control the heat.

If you don't have an AC, I would be cautious on putting anymore heat in the room. You could get a cool tube which would help keep the heat down tremendously. How much room do you have? Possibly a 600w instead? They're about the same price. I know some people do not like glass to be between the light and their plants, so they might recommend a wing reflector, but I wouldn't go that route unless you have a way of cooling the room.

I'm growing in my closet and 600w would be too hot. I'm deciding between a cool hood or a wing reflector but I don't know which is better to use because I want to grow about 3-4 plants

If you are worried about it being to hot, cool tube all the way. Again, unless an air conditioner comes into play.

Air cooled hoods better to change the light bulbs. With cool tube, you'll have to disconnect vents to access them.

how do I set up ventilation for the cool hood
The best way is to use two exhaust lines. To cool hoods bring cool night time air in through hoods and out of room. To exhaust room you will need at the very least a passive intake. Once you have intake in place go, carbon filter>inline fan>ducting to the outside. Good luck

I use to run two 1000 watt HPS lights over a 9'x5' table. I used the XXXL 6" cooled hoods. intake>ducting>hoods>inline fan>ducting to outside. This method kept my room cool for 8 months/year. Summer time the room would get too warm so I would shut it down during the summer. I always did a outdoor grow during this time so it was NO problem. I hope this helps.
