Depends on where in Ca. you are as to what strains do well in your area. Its a big state with a bunch of different micro climates.
North coast: you need a mold reistant fast finishing strain
Inland desert area: can grow just about anything
Seirra foothills: Faster strains work better ( early frost and snow )
Do you want an indica or sativa?

What grows in the south may not be good for up north, what grows well in the central valley may not work in the mountains or the coastal areas.

Just to many variables to list, do some research on your favorite strains and what kind of conditions your local climate provides. Do your homework first or narrow the question down to specific reqirements.

Sorry if I sound rude, but thats the brunt of it

I've never added supplemental lighting. Just make sure your garden gets at least six hours of direct sunlight, preferably morning sun, which you can get by growing on the south side of your property. If possible build a simple raised bed. Generally bigger is better but for your first run try 3'x3 ' and six inches tall. You'll need about six bags to fill. It's so much easier then digging and amending the existing soil.

If it gets really cold, buy white garden fabric and toss it over the plants and tie it down.http://parkseed.com/parks-plant-frost-protector-film/p/v1548/
