Building a smell proof room for growing

Hey guys i'm moving from my old house to a new apartment but the thing is now i need to make a smell proof room so no neighbor notices any smell...

Basically the place i will have to grow have the following dimensions (L x W x H)... 12ft x 9ft x 8.5ft... So basically 918ft³ (cubic feet). Even though i'll be growing inside grow tents (4 small tents, 2 for flower and 2 for vegging) and both flower tents will have exhaust + carbon filters, i need a smell-proof room, so everytime i open the tents to water or manage the plants the smell don't leak from inside this room.

I need an exhaust system with the right carbon filter to make this room smell proof. So i can go inside and manage the plants, water them, without having any smell leak. I've heard to have a smell proof system you need to exchange the air 5-8 times a hour. Is that right ?

I've been doing some maths but it doesn't seem right... https://www.omnicalculator.com/construction/cfm i've used this website to calculate my CFM needs but it says it's only 120 CFM with 8 full air exchanges / hour... I really don't think it's right... If you look at 3x3 tents most people use 5in exhaust fans + 5in carbon filters and it's around 230 CFM...

So if anyone can help me with that...

Id recommend adding some type of air cleaner for the air inside the grow space aswell as your carbon filter for extraction. Ozone generator both cleans the smell and kills pathogens but theyre quite pricey.

Which fan size / cfm would you recommend for that area ? 12ft x 9ft x 8.5ft (913ft³)

@haze010 (saw you on the other topic about smell proof areas, would like your suggestion if you can)

120 CFM * 60 min / 918 ft³ = 7.8 exchanges/hr

Haven't seen 5" fans, 4", 6", and 8" are pretty common.

It's always better to get a larger fan and run it slower if need be; the carbon filter will be much larger and more effective as well.

How the hell do you plan on exhausting a room in an apartment and no one will notice lol? I think your best bet is just to use a scrubber and constantly have a fan pulling air through another carbon filter just out in the room.

But that's exactly what i'm looking for, to exhaust the air through carbon filter to outside the grow room

So a 120CFM exhaust fan would be enough to make it smell proof from outside the room ?

If you have a tent with carbon filter, a room scrubber will definitely do the job, you start sticking things out windows you might get noticed. The smell reduction you'll need outside the tent will be pretty minimal, there will be multiple solutions that work for this situation I'm sure.

just get two carbon filters and two fans. one for the tent exhausting back into the room. the other to scrub the air in the room. fire up the second carbon filter when your harvesting so you dont stink up the place. id overkill it personally couple 6 inch fans with good filters on each. i assume absolute stealth is important here?

Do you live on the top floor or the basement? The scrubber Idea is what will work safely, I personally wouldn't risk cutting holes, plus you would have an easy take down and leave no trace in case you needed to move it quick for an inspection or water leak from above apartment. To many random variables for unnecessary risk.

I live in the top floor (last unit) it's in the corner so i don't have any neighbor windows near the room...

Right but when people drive by they'll see the same windows along the whole unit then bam, "what's that vent coming out that window?" It's really up to you but seems ridiculous to me when better, more stealthy, more effective tech exists.

Yup, so the optimal case should be: carbon filters + exhaust in both tents + exhaust/carbon filter outside the tents to another room ?

Carbon filters+exhaust in both tents, carbon filter and fan that scrubs the room, room is sealed completely with slight negative pressure, mini split and humidifier and de humidifier control environment in sealed room, CO2 is added and regulated in sealed room. That's optimal but good luck with all that in a rented apartment. If you just want to grow some weed and not get caught then carbon filters on the exhaust of each tent and one fan pulling through a carbon filter within in the room to scrub the unsealed room air and you're done and no one else knows any wiser.

I was drying weed in my closet but the smell just made the whole house smell like a dispensary. So I rigged up a drying box to cut down on the smell and not dry out my herb to fast.

I just got home and usually when there is a plant drying anywhere in the house, as soon as you open the front door it punches you right in the face, today when I got home I smelled nothing but maybe slightly wet dog cause it was snowing and my boys ran up to me to give me kisses lol.

And maybe Vivosun tents are just good now or whatever I'm not really too sure but this run has some fire buds in getting within a few weeks of the end and you wouldn't even know by the smell until you open the tent door.

The apartment is mine... So carbon filters on both tents and a carbon filter outside the tent just to filter the inside air of the grow room, is that right ?
