Blood Pressure and Keto

I had some issues at the beginning of this year with my blood pressure. I was at stroke levels. A couple years ago I was very heavy and lost about 90 pounds to where I had nothing left to lose, then ended up in surgery and bed-ridden for months with a lot of pain when doing much. Kind of killed what I was very active doing which was a lot of gardening. Slowly I gained all of my weight back as I became more sedentary and ate for pain a lot of times (frozen Reeses Cups made me feel a bit better dunno). Anyways after the blood pressure scare (I was used to pain but not losing my mind) someone informed me of a Keto Blood Pressure diet, and I decided I would give it a shot. 3 months ago my BP averaged 195/125 without medication. Obviously I got on medication for my health. Keto has worked so well for me, I love carbs but it ended up being just what I needed (not that I am saying it is the best fad diet or lifestyle etc). For me cheating on Keto was a no go, because after the Keto Flu and knowing one cheat meal would throw me out of ketosis it worked to remind myself there is no way I am going to cheat and then go through all of that for a week before I start making progress again.

My BP is now 144/75 without medication, and I have gone completely off of medication, and lost 45 pounds.

I know that once I hit my goal I have to be careful, but I don't really ever plan on going back to the way I was. My appetite itself has diminished greatly and I am able to do things in activity level that I haven't done in a couple years without near as much pain.

Anyways, just wanted to share.

I have 55 more pounds to go.

Well done man.

Keto flu is from a lack of salts, you need to get your calcium , sodium ect.
You need to up those and you shouldn't get keto flu even if you kick yourself out of ketosis every week.

Good job man I’ve been doing keto for a few years now. i run a min of 4 miles a day and lift. My bp runs somewhere in the range of 122/70. ive had a scan done to see if the high fat diet has clogged my heart and found that there is zero plaque build up and at 37 my heart is as healthy as can be. Keep it up

Keto diet can be efective ofc. But lately I used procedure because wanted to get rid of fats and used coolsculpting. I think such procedure can be useful for my skin and body.

Good shit. Let me tell you that keto has been extremely helpful for me and my wife.

My wife has PCOS and has not only a hard time losing weight but the PCOS affects how her body processes carbs.

For me it levels my hormones and I feel just a ton better mentally.

As for the BP. Yea it helps alot. But you must be mindful of not doing too much fat. Specifically fats that are not EFA (essential fatty acids).

Some no EFAs are essential and should be consumed but you have to make sure you have a solid amount of EFAs.

Happy to hear you are successful in this lifestyle change.

It's been a while but I have mostly continued with a high fat, low carb diet. Since I first posted this I am down 115 lbs. I also started working out with a trainer and am doing things I didn't think I'd be able to do for the rest of my life. After many surgeries I'd just kind of accepted that I'd live a sedentary lifestyle. After losing weight and strengthening my core I've been bowling. I've redone more in my house. I didn't think I'd ever bowl again with the bending and twists. After I focused more on my physical fitness I found my spiritual and mental acuity to be raised as well. It took pain and effort but bitterness just enhances sweetness.

The way I understand it your body can run off fat or sugar...
It will take sugar first if it can as it needs no further processing and leave all the fat stuck on your midriff.
If you don't cut the sugar the fat ain't going anywhere.

I seem to be stuck at the same wight despite eating less than recommended daily calories because I just can't say no to sweet coffee... (have gone down to about 1.5tsp of sugar per cup though) I'm only like 6kg overweight...

I never had luck with calories personally either. Sugars are carbs are sugars in terms of fuel for our bodies. Our bodies if I understand it right tend to prefer to burn carbs for energy and store fats. I eat under 20 carbs a day generally so it burns fat. I do eat tons of vegetables, fatty meats, and use basically most non seed oils. Some people do well on low fat, high carb diets. For keto if you had a tsp and a half of sugar in your coffee that's fine then it's just a question of other carbs (bread, fruit sugars, grains). I think in America anyways we tend to eat high carb, high fat. Unless you burn a ton of calories daily with intense daily work or exercise it's rough.

I thought I was doing good eating fruits, keeps me from eating sweets... But I have a good couple of cups of coffee every day. I'm not big into bread, might have two slices if there is nothing else to eat. I think what is catching me is that I have to eat breakfast now with all my meds. but I stick to stuff like all bran. Sadly we don;t have all bran budz here... or I;d have switched to that. the doctors rave over it for fibre.

Hey man 6 kg isn't much over weight and you aren't gaining weight. You are doing good. To cut it you would have to change activity or intake one but 6 kg isn't that much. I think fruits are great for you. They just have a lot of sugars. I had a lot more weight to cut than you so I was pretty intense. I needed to lose 160 lbs. I'm about 40ish from that goal now..although with working out and building muscle mass I may not need to go as far.

Early 90s I went from a brief high of 212, but mostly 200 or so to a low of 139. Quit carbs and sugar and walked more, been around 145 for many years. I do exercise more than most and I do more carbs now but almost no added sugar.
Very little highly processed foods. Breaking the sugar/craving/hunger cycle is a real key.

Everything really is loaded with sugar and carbs. When I take a break from keto I just am more aware or carbs and sugars. I don't gain wait having bread or rice occasionally. I just don't have a burger with fries and an appetizer with carbs etc.

My only problem now after having been on keto and OMAD for about 5 years and mostly quitting because the kids want to follow my eating habits; I'd pounded it into my head that carrots, beans, rice, etc. aren't good when, in reality, they're not that bad compared to a lot of other foods.

It's just a balance I think. I think people's bodies are uniquely suited to process different t things well. Some do great on a low fat high carb diet. Rice, sushi vegetables fish. I guess now when I get to where I want to be..I'll just try to be more mindful about having either in excess. Tbf though I've never counted carrots and most vegetable carbs. Those are offset.
