airpot bed

so i had these 4 8L airpots i use in one of my 2x2s. i decided i dont want to use them anymore because i wanted to lower my plant count and grow bigger plants instead. i was thinking of buying bigger plastic pots like i have in my 4x4 (74L) but then i was struck by an idea. i tried it and it looks like this might work.

i just screwed together 3 of those 8L airpots sitting in a 60x60 tray. filled it with reused organic mix (all coco), added perlite, basalt, ewc, manure, bat guano, a bit of hydroton and wheat bran and mulched it with hay. i also lined the bottom with stems from old plants just to fill some space.

i think it holds about 55L of medium which is nice enough for big plants and water only grows. i transplanted a clone of caribe i had in my mother tent. its under a 3000K diy cob rig pulling about 130w from the wall.

anyway here it is and lets see how it goes.

Plenty of medium for one plant in a 2 x 2 area. A very ingenious repurposing of your pots. And - that thing could double as a bathtub when ( if ? ) you are done growing.



As one who loves what a 4 square foot plant can yield, I am interested to see how mucho mas grande you can get that lady.

yeah it could definitely double as a tub for a couple of babies or dogs.

i just want to go water only and not even trying to push the yield and i am also vertically challenged in this tent but i am guessing it will definitely yield more buds.

for this plant i am gonna do 1-2 weeks of veg and flip and we will see whats what.

It's a 5 footer?

i think its about 170cm tall so a bit taller than 5 feet but still short tent

I agree that a 183 cm (6') would be nice but you can still get a pretty wide plant with only 170 cm of headroom.

FYI - all of my grows have been in a 150 cm (5') tall tent.

yeah i think itll be ok the only time i had problems was with very stretchy sativa dominant hybrids. caribe is sativa dominant too but stays short for a sativa dom.

if this works out i may do something similar with my other 2x2 too and save myself from a lot of future labor at every harvest.

first week was all transplant shock because when i was transplanting i cut off about 2/3 of the root mass. so in the first week about half of the plant died off or got pruned. all leaves were yellowing or brown/bronze and crispy.

i just let it ride it out with the lights pulled way above and in the last 3-4 days i am seeing very healthy new growth. so i lowered the lights and cleaned off all the lower growth.

also still havent watered since the transplant and i feel the roots almost at the edges now. so i am guessing this gal will be flipped in a week or 10 days.

me too. i didnt even flipped yet so i dont know how well it will perform later in flowering but no runoff from the sides and great air exchange all around plus square shape so not much wasted space. wish the company also made square bottoms..

topdressed with some malted barley, watered with 1/4 tsp of spirulina and flipped to 12/12.

Is this a 2' by 2' area?
With the tub as bottom with the sticks. Any potential run-off stays in the tub? Just trying to visualize.
Very creative with the airpots.

It's a mixture with coco, perlite, manure(guessing soil/soiless mix to put it plainly) and it's probably not to runoff.

yeah its a garland 2x2 tray, the one in the pic. 3 airpots screwed together sits directly on the tray. for runoff, its handwatered so i dont water too much at one time. i wait till its dry under the mulch and give about 4-5L. i havent gotten any runoff yet.

its like coco, ewc, perlite, some hydroton, lava stones, lava stone sand, basaltic sand, pumice, wheatbran, manure, guano, activated carbon, zeolite and zeolite sand and even some tiny clay shards. and yeah the idea is to not to leech nutrients with runoff.

did some defol and stripped some lower growth. so far so good.

I am on a learning curve with air pots right now but I have to say I really like them. Your idea of using your own resources is great. I also grow in coco but completely different way so for my purposes this would mean a disaster. You maybe did it intentionaly, but original airpots have first two upper rows of cones uncut to prevent water spilling and the cones are much longer than yours. They are not edged as yours so the roots grow out of them and then get prunned by the air. They are also $ because made out of foodgrade plastic. You might have got ripped off or you just wanted to save few bucks. Anyway good job on recovery of the plant.
