I'll retract the direct into soil as "stupid" statement and say I have way more successful doing it my way.

WRONG. Direct into soil is just plan stupid. Every seed of mine starts in shot glass of tap water overnight. Then into moist paper towel in zip lock half open. If good seeds they pop everytime. I literally just pulled a fresh seed off pollinated plant and popped the seed in 2 days.
