    Soil organic matter(SOM)

Ok, good! You can play with that later. What I do with liming agent that keeps life simple is treat it as a stand alone. Not part of any 'mineral mix' nor added/counted with any other amendment. It is my second ingredient in the mix, the first being the peat moss. 1cup/cf of total mix that you...

    Soil organic matter(SOM)

I think the peat and aeration is your bet bet right now and what I would do/have done in a similar situation. Just make sure you lime the peat before adding it. Your pH was low on the sample, no need to make it lower. LOL Wet

    Soil organic matter(SOM)

No telling what they would say at first, but you can bet your ass it ends up at "operator error", or something similar. No slam on Stang, 'operator error' is a #1 fallback position. Just saying Wet

my living soil amendments, what do you think?

I'll end up with some worms in the containers just from the cocoons in the fresh VC, but adding worms turned out to be a not so good idea and I no longer do it. Turning your container into a quasi worm bin, over time, ends up mainly castings and perlite, great for worms, not so great for growing...

    Calcium to tea

A couple of thoughts here: Fresh VC does pretty much take care of everything. Vermicompost is the only compost that goes in my mixes, no thermal type compost of any sort. Disclaimer: I DO use a good bit of Black Kow during the season as a top dress, not in the mix, but consider it more as a...

favorite food to feed your worm bin?

There are some headed in that direction, to turn the VC into a stand alone fertilizer. But, to say the least, it's not a fast process even with a well established worm bin(s). With a brand new bin like what you are doing, figure on a year at least. This ^^ is pretty much a plain and simple...

Help with interpreting first soil report / recommendations

Promix is really nothing more than the base mix I outlined above, peat moss, perlite, and some lime. I have no experience with it (or any bagged mixes), because it didn't exist when I first learned to make my own mix 45+ years ago. The company that makes it did (Premier), and I have used their...

Help with interpreting first soil report / recommendations

Naw, don't waste that much mix, but it does seem toxic as is. What you could do is make a 1:1 base mix of peat moss and perlite only to cut the mix with and do some 'sperminting' to see what will get you to something you can work with, like 50/50 base to tox or wherever you feel to start. I...

Help with interpreting first soil report / recommendations

Just how much of this toxic mix do you have? I mean, you could try and fix it, or, just call it a wash and go with a fresh peat based mix and avoid the drama.

    Soil organic matter(SOM)

Stang Before you go down this particular rabbit hole there is a concept that you haven't fully grasped that underlies a LOT of your (and many others), problems, false starts and poor decisions AFA soil. That is: Agriculture (soil farming/gardening) and Horticulture (container...

Help with interpreting first soil report / recommendations

It's not the molasses, nor the kelp. You seem to want to look everywhere but at the elephant in the middle of the room leaching K and sodium into your soil. Do a google search on *coco coir and K toxicity* and do some research on the root cause of your K tox, the continued use of coco. Just...

    The transition to Organic gardening....

THAT^^^ First things first, 1lb of worms is fine. 1/2&1/2 Euros and red wrigglers is a great combo. I started out with the DIY double 18gal Rubbermaid totes. Still running them (6 bins now), 8 years later. However, Richard is more than correct in that they are prone to too much moisture and...

    Langbeinite...Any alternatives?

Not really. The only real alternative is Karanja, but it's almost always both or neither AFA availability. Gonna have to bite the bullet on this one. Good news is, you really don't need a bunch to reap the benefits, a 1/2cup/cf will take care of that. Using it as a N source can get spendy...

Any tips on using old pro mix that has salt content?

+1 They add enough to get it on the ingredient list, but not enough to complete the grow. If what you are counting on is what came IN the pro mix you really should do the full 1cup/cf. Why gamble with your pH?

Any tips on using old pro mix that has salt content?

Yes, at the least add the 1/4 cup. How much did you add 3 months ago? I mean, it's kinda hard to over apply lime, but easy enough to under apply it. Lime buffering is a physical action and it needs to be in physical contact with, or, very close proximity to what it's buffering. That's why I...

    Aloe Vera?

Lily of the Desert is good stuff. I get it at WalMart for ~$6.50/gallon, so don't pay inflated prices at the vitamin shop. Yes, everything you mentioned is pretty much correct and a quick search of the organics section for *aloe* should yeild tons of info. Amazing stuff!

Any tips on using old pro mix that has salt content?

If it never had lime added I would suggest the 1cup/cf amount. The 1/4cup amount if it had been limed a year or 2 previously. Treat it like a fresh mix, not a reamend.

Any tips on using old pro mix that has salt content?

OSF is fine. 1cup/cf is pretty standard for unlimed mixes. If it's a reamend this gets adjusted accordingly if it was limed before. Not quite flushing, but a few heavy waterings took care of it for me. Regular waterings wash it out, that's why you need to use it so often. Crab shell is a good...

Any tips on using old pro mix that has salt content?

Let er rip! A bit of lime for pH (important), a bit of gypsum IF you have it. The gypsum will help strip the salts from the mix, but they leach out pretty quick on their own from my experience. I had a boatload of soil like that when I transitioned to organics and had zero problems with any...

    ShLUbY's Garden

That is correct. I just didn't want to violate any 'rules' linking to another forum, but this is what Coot was refering to AFA "quality vermicompost". A friend of Coot who clued us in to this is more a small organic farmer than a mj producer and his 'testing' covered a wide variety of plants...
