    NoTillPhil's 2018 Backyard Tree Mission

These are my oldest starts ever and your not the first to tell me I jumped the gun. I do have two of my six that are more like 8 week transplants. So we are going to get a good visual side by side on the difference in growth. If you can start to early this will be the year I learn that lol...

Around here puddles leave salt stains and you can visibly see the salt lines along creeks and waterways. Saline content is the biggest battle with fixing our soil. So for me it's mostly plant matter when it comes to adding organic material. I did add some cow manure to the compost piles before...

Spotted them pretty quickly so I think I'll get a hold of them before it's much of a problem. Just sucks I was bug free for last six months or so other than a temporary gnat problem.

In NY I would have probably had similar results. Here in Colorado the salt content of cow manure is to high. Thanks for answering my question though, I'm sure you've got a few peoples wheels turning.

Took in a few clones for a friend and now have thrips and spider mites on the plants. I new I should have washed them but got lazy. Now everyone is going outside for a shower. Rissin rassen rutton.

Ah ok, Horse manure? I used to have horses and found you could use straight manure for seedlings but never considered using it for a long term potting mix.

is it normal for the lower buds to look ready?

In my experience it's normal for some plants to finish from the bottom up.

    Soil composition

And again, I agree. This is what I was getting at with my first post in this thread. I rarely actually measure but it's because I'm usually fully aware I'm applying at lower than recommended rates. More like ...... a handful of this and a handful of that.

Round is convenient because they are self supporting. With wire, square would need corners and stakes all around.

I added three today that are 38" across. Same depth but soil under isn't nearly as amended as the first three. Basically turned with a handful of fertilizer. I have to buy and add mix this week for those pots.

I looked up 400 gallon smart pots and they were 50"x 24". That's where my guesstimate came from. I'm also a few inches in the ground with the fence. Figure it's close enough considering there is no bottom and the soil under them has been worked and amended.
