i have heard that 6500k(daylight) spectrum help to promote females if used alone(no other spectrum) but not sure of the results. But a mixed spectrum is also healthy for the plant. Get at least 2 to 3 cfls per plant for now... and add more lower around the plant as it gets bigger. if you train...

i am thinking the burn if from not enough nutes. the plant will start using leaves from the bottom to feed the top. I believe this because i am using The Ultimate Potting soil which contains mainly coco peat and perlite and i have not even started using my nutes. I just found that FoxFarm...

i always train my plants to grow in circles; indoors it keeps them shorter, outdoors it keeps them out of plain view; plus the sucker plants get more light which = more size
