I think you are talking about a carbon filter. You can blow through them. The reason most people pull air through them is they come with a pre filter wrap which catches small particals and makes your carbon last longer.

Pick up a plastic kids pool at Target or Kmart.

Do all the outlets go off in that room, some rooms are hooked up to two breakers. If so hook the light up to the outlet that does not shut off with that breaker, it will spread the load.

We use the green CFLs from lowes, they seem to work well and give off enough light to work in the room.
