Dont trust everything you see on youtube. You can do it either way but its better and easier imo to put them in soil. The plug alone will dry out faster and when the roots hit the outside of the plug theyll want nutes and get them immediately. Reallly though no reason for it. Natures got it...

Drops work and are cheap and you dont have to calibrate If your using soil theyll get close enough for soil to buffer the rest. Ive used both. Now use ph meter. But i always keep 7.0 ph buffer around and calibrate every other water
