Does potency vary within the same plant?

I believe so... but depends. Some plants are frosty up top while the bottom stuff isn't as coated.

well the dense nugs from solid colas, will have a higher density of trics per cm or whatever
than the leafy popcorn buds at the bottom
so if you consume the plant matter,/buds the colas will be better, much better in flavor, and better in potency
when you crumble the same amount of plant matter in a joint, the better buds will have more thc overall in a given volume of plant matter in a joint
but if you extract the resin from upper and lower buds, it will have the same thc levels % wise for the same weight of resin
but you will obviously get more from the better bud overall

Which is why people that wanna smoke a whole plant will cut the top, and wait for the bottom to finish. People who don't usually make hash oun of the bottom... It's not that you lost potency. It's that you couldn't wait for it to be done... LOL!

he has a point, 2 out of the 3 main types of trics do not contain much THC
so it is possible for some plants to produce a reasonable amount of resin glands overall
but have a lower percentage of those glands that are Capitate-Stalked (higher THC containing)
also some sativa plants can have a high percentage of Capitate-Stalked trics
and a lower amount of the other glands resulting in plants that do not have a great deal of resin overall
but are still potent
still in most cases plants that do have lots of resin tend to be potent from my own experience

yea im for real...I've smoked weed before that was frostier than a slurpee on a summer day and didn't get high because of the strain type

Some plants have lower buds that mature slower, so if the entire plant is harvested at the same time then the comparative levels of thc and cbd will be different giving differing effects. Some people have grown plants where the opposite has happened - lower buds maturing first - not seen this myself though.
lol good thing I let it mature fully and examine the trichs! Just wondering if I were to leave on lower stuff (that I usually cut away anyways about a week before flowering) would it be potent or meh in comparison to the other buds.

Unless you have supplemental lighting your sucker branches, and pop-corn buds are taking away resources from the plant.
Only harvest the flower clusters that are ripe If it's your personal smoke. Your buds will be more the same quality.
Cure your buds for atleast 3 months. IMO- growing gives you 2/3 of your potency/quality. Curing gives you the other 1/3 of what the best your buds will ever be.
A good example of curing. I gave a friend a Acapulco Gold plant that didn't turn out like I wanted. 6 months later he packs one up of the shit I gave him. Anyways it was kick-ass. I sorta regretted giving it to him. LOL

I've got a bowl loaded right now from my crop before the last one. It was pretty good at harvest...its kicking my current harvests ass for potency and smooth flavor. Its been in jar for 3.5 months.To op if you were to get technical each flower has differing potency and I find that the bud just below the tops tend to be my favorite bit I run my lights pretty close.Cutting bottom suckers off is way more worth having a few extra buds at the end. It helps tops get fatter and def helps keep molds down.
