Hemp products can still obviate much of the demand for hydrocarbons which will not only reduce the cost but also possibly the impact environmentally.
Jatropha curcas may be superior for biofeul, but can't be used for much else, where as hemp can be harvested for oils and the remainder is still useful for fiber.
I turned an old bike into a 12v generator so whenever I use more than my panels can replace, either because of clouds or heavy drain or just at night, I can pedal to keep my charge controller happy. I think this sort of tech is worth using already, and it's development appears rapid.
I still don't see it having much use for AC infrastructure however.
