Alaska. 907. The last frontier. Who lives there? Who been there? Who wants to go?

I've been here 30 years. It's home. Bout 0 degrees now, seasonal depression at its height for most... solstice just passed... Almost time to enjoy the Alaskan summer again, which is why I stay.

I recently started a group called "AK PRIDE", which can be found in my profile for those of you that would like to see some pictures of Alaska. I'll post more, trust me... 8 pictures doesn't do justice.

Wish it would snow more so I could take my sled out. But in the mean time, I'll tend to my other "hobby" :leaf:

Once the water is open though, boat is going in the water and I can relax with no one around while I take a nap in the afternoon sun.. just so my fishing pole alarm clock can wake me up when I have a fish-onnn yeahha!

It's not a bad life. But, if you're gonna be vacationing here.. Don't go to the Russian or Kenai Rivers please? Tourists drive Alaskans absolutely bonkers during combat fishing season lol. Sorry, had to say it haha!

You neglected area code 250.

But I'm a 907 dude myself - first got up here in 77.
No place like home ~clicks heels together~

My boat is covered in snow as we speak - winters seem to keep getting longer & summers shorter.
I agree with the combat fishing, I cannot stand it so I break out my flyrod & act like some spastic windmill.
They give me space after that. ;-)

Drift boat seems to work best for me. Although, I had more fun at the mouth dip netting this year than I did along the banks.

Just got my hunting permits turned in about a week ago before deadline. Cannot wait to go keel something!!

I've always wanted to live there, you could still get parcels from the state back in the 70's and all you had to do was fence it. I couldn't find a girl that shared that same dream.....

Didn't even need a fence, just staked off if I remember right? I could be wrong on that though. There are a lot of fat homesteads around that originated from the 70's. That's for sure!

I put in for Goat, Sheep & brown bear.
How about you ?

And I recognize the first two pics.
I drive that every year headed out for moose.

Yep, those two are on the flats, just rounding the eklutna corner. Everyone from AK should recognize those :)

Goat, Sheep, Moose, brown bear, bison. bow and rifle hunts. pretty much covering the entire state.

Unit 12 sheep is my favorite. (Over in the Tok, AK) area... no pun intended.

Yeah, I recognized the flats right away.

And I like unit 12 as well, we used to live in Tok & I hunt there every year.

Well... that's how Ice Road truckers was. Most people don't know, is it's rare in alaska to drive over ice with a vehicle, let alone a big rig. (bodies of water) Ice roads on the north slope are typically water over tundra, to protect the land. The most they risk in most areas are falling through the ice and being stuck there until heavy equipment can get them out.

The stuff about the Dalton, the drive from fairbanks to deadhorse, is definitely a sketchy one and I sure wouldn't want to drive truck up that highway in the winter. No thanks.

Smoother yes. Yeah I took a newer model truck to Manley Hot Springs, which goes west where the dalton starts. Good god. Had to get a paintjob as soon as I got home. Chips galore!

What's life like in Alaska? I've thought about retiring there, building a cabin like they did back in the day and live out my old age, dooable? Impossible? Am I dreaming?

Shit seems pretty cold from a Californian's perspective..

I was reading a very recent thread on here about a RIU member who was busted. Cops came to his house and smelled marijuana - that was probable cause.

Well, that's one nice thing about Alaska! Don't have to worry about that BS! And Alaska sure is pretty. Plus, the WP&YR out of Skagway is probably one of the most awesome train rides ever.

But...

I used to ski when I was a 20-something. Now, I have zero desire. I never hunted, and only fished with my dad when I was a kid. The older I get, the less interest I have in anything outdoorsy. So Alaska can be a great place for people into avoiding bears and moose. I'd rather get back to a city and avoid pickpockets and transit strikes.

If you're a city-type, then there's hardly anything here for you (or me). Anchorage is just a suburb, although not a suburb of Seattle like some claim. I grew up in the suburbs of NYC and funny thing - you could drive to the city for the evening.

p.s. Anchorage has one of the busiest commercial shipping airports. Yet we cannot get free shipping on a lot of things. It is strange - I've eaten Alaskan King Crab shipped fresh from Washington and stuff like that.
