SO confused :) ? about Fan Speed control

I'm a nub when it comes to fans and after a lot of reading through old threads I have a few questions.

SO I hooked up my CanFan and I think i went a little overboard in the size. I got this one (http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Can-Fan-6-inch-392-CFM-High-output-Exhaust-Fan/5498160/product.html) for only 80 bucks USD.

After running it in a negative pressure set up It was sucking in the walls of my dr120 really bad with a passive air intake. And the other problem is, it's just to loud and pushes a lot more air then needed.

Now I've read that speed controllers like this are bad ( http://www.harborfreight.com/router-speed-control-43060.html ) that can cause a hum and reduce the life of a fan.

I've also read this is the way to go ( http://www.officebeyond.com/va-130-0300.html )

I'm cooling a 600watt light. and I'm a little confused of the placement of filter, light and fan.

so this is the set up i was thinking

Filter--------->Light------->Fan------>exhaust out the tent.... with the fan connected to a variac...

man I feel like a super nub..... And i should of bought a slower fan....

Is this the proper way of doing things or should i just buy the cheap speed controller for 20 bucks

any input is much appreciated

Get a cheep speed control ,one for a inline fan !
Drop your speed down a bit !
And you can do it like 2 ways
Filter -light - fan
filter -fan -light !!
Good luck

I would say not to buy the hf ! Imop
just go on amazon or eBay type 600 cfm speed control ,
20$ :) your controller needs to be specific for a grow fan ! Imop

your better of with a big fan and speed control.
small fan on full= lots of noise
big fan with speed controll=same suction as small fan but no noise. :-)
don't buy a cheap speed controller as your fan will hum like a mo fo! and not good for the fan.
get a decent one designed for fans. usually bout £50 upwards. avoid dimmers!

Your plan is correct, you'll get much better cooling and wont kill your fan as fast if your pulling air through filter and lamp rather than pushing and you usually get what you pay for, rethink cheap

I'm just going to pray I don't get a hum and try out a speed controller. according to the Canfan site its all good..

I also read on their site to Pull the air through the filter and push the air through the light to help prevent excessive heat through the fan motor.

I really appreciate all the advice from you guys thanks for taken the time to read this:) :joint:

Are your fans Speed Controllable?

Yes. Both the Can-Fan and the Max-Fan line of fans are speed controllable, DO NOT SET THE SPEED OR MOTOR CONTROL BELOW 40% OPERATING SPEED TO AVOID OVERHEATING THE FAN.
The Max-Fan 12" is not conventionally speed controlled, The Max-Fan 12" requires the Can-Trol Speed control. This control provides absolutely no motor hum when controlling the fan, it also gives you the option to control the voltage entering your fan, with an easy to use dial you can go from 1v to 130V with a turn of your hand, no matter what voltage you run, your fan will not hum!

I'll tell you WHAT NOT TO DO.

Don't hook your fan speed controller to the power strip that your fans are plugged into. It will fry the fan speed controller.

1 controller, 1 fan.

If your wondering how long I had my fans plugged into the power strip, and the controller controlling it.. 2 days before the controller died.
