Good soil recipe?

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone knows a good soil recipe that would outdo MG Organic choice. The ingredients need to be available at your average home depot. I'm using MG now and I'm not too thrilled with it and I cant afford FF at the moment so I thought maybe I could make some killer soil myself. Any suggestions?

well first off if your gonna make good soil your gonna have to spend more money than a bag of FF cost but you will get more for your money if you make your own

a good recipe i use for vegging is:
5 parts peat moss or coco coir
3 parts pearlite
2 parts worm castings
4 cups per cubic foot epsoma plant tone
1 cup per cubic foot powdered dolomite lime
mix it all together thoroughly then moisten it all and let sit for 2 weeks

this stuff is great to put seeds directly into, i have used it successfully with autoflowering plants through flower and photosensitive plants vegging cycle for 4-6 weeks.

if you cant afford to grow dont grow simple as that save up some money first till you have everything you need no point in jumping in when the well is dry

No offense taken, I've already started growing though haha. The only FF bags I found were like 35 bucks and I thought that was rediculous. I can afford it it just seems like such a high price for soil. I'll probably just pick up some FFHF. Anyone have links to a good place to order online?

1 3 cf bag of premier mix (Home depot, Lowes lots of places carry this stuff)
1 cf of used peat based soil (or fresh if used is unavailable)
2 cf of homemade thermo compost or high quality vermicompost (Coast of Maine lobster compost great stuff and same with their EWC)
.5 cf perlite, lava rock, rice hulls, pumice, or coco husks (take your pick).
6 cups of Espoma brand bio tone starter plus
2 cups alfalfa meal (commercial feed supply store)
3 cups kelp meal (commercial feed supply store)
3 cups crab meal (Neptune's Harvest)
2 cups of a 50/50 mix of Neem cake and Karanja cake ( neemsource.com shipping is a killer)
For minerals mix
1 cup of dolomite lime (Espoma)
1 cups of soft rock phosphate (Espoma)
1 cup of oyster shell (pet store has it get the non charcoal type)
1 cup gypsum (Espoma)
3/4 cup of sul po mag (commercial feed supply store)
1 cup of Azomite or rock dust (commercial feed supply store)
Mix it up really good on a tarp or something and let it rest or "cook" for a few weeks or even better a few months and use. Make sure the compost or vermicompost are of the highest quality this is very important. It is the difference between good soil and great soil.

then find a normal organic seedling soil from your local garden center ..

most importent is that the PH of the soil is between 6 and 7 (some cheap "super market" soils is low with to much peetmoss)

beside that get some perlit and add about 30%

that should give you a good base, but with that you will also have to add nuts early on (after 1-2 weeks or so) unless you can get some worm casting or compost and add about 10% then you should be good for 3-4 weeks, in my country I can collect free compost at my local dump, and if I go for a little drive out side the city I can find farms who sell worm casting cheap as dirt ..

SuperSoil with a 20-30% mix of perlite works great... just don't get perlite with the timed release nutes... You can play around with the mixture a bit to suit your needs. Hope this helps...

Update: Cost is under $10 a batch...

Kellogg's patio potting mix, Black Gold potting mix, lots of good organic soils besides ffof. The one you have is not bad.

Add some perlite to it and some earthworm castings.

I use ffof because it is readily available and add perlite and ewc for veg. In flower do the same but mix in Rainbow Mix flower to it, 2 tbsp per gallon. I only water and do not add any nutes.

if you want to order online you should look in to coco bricks ...

will cost less in shipping, you can even reuse it a few times if you flush it and it come close to hydro, great medium, just a bit different then soil, your water and nut paten will be slightly different so will the PH of your water (5,8 )
