I have trouble with clones too. I can never get them to survive in potting mix; not even a seed starting mix. I have better luck using fast food paper cups with lids. I rinse the cup out and add fresh room temperature bottled water, dip the stem in rooting hormone, and then poke the stem through the paper cup lid.
I also cut the tips of the leaves so the plant focuses it's energy on root development instead of leaves. After that I just have to remember to change out the water every day. A DWC would be better since it oxygenates the water, but I'm too lazy and cheap to buy the supplies to build one, and this is how I always rooted roses and other plants in the garden.
