Could use some business advice

Its freshmen year and just about to start the 2nd semester of college. Tuition is higher than ever and I could really use some extra income. There is this energy drink around that everybody loves but they aren't available locally in stores. we have to go to the dorms all the way on the other side of campus to buy from an acquaintance. I can get 1 case (28 cans) fairly cheap from an old friend from high school and with a reasonable mark up I can sell them at fair price to my friends and still reach a desirable profit. Just by living in the dorms i know a solid 10-15 people who I talk and hang out with regularly. I have no intentions of expanding or going to anybody outside of my niche.

The first problem is that I don't want to be seen as that guy trying to promote a drink and make a profit all the time A.K.A. Promoter/Salesman. I just want to kick it with the guys and just drink our drinks as we always do when classes are done for the day. So my plan is to keep stocked on plenty of drinks and naturally when my friends finish theirs they are gonna hit me up for some more because they know how well I keep myself stocked! My second problem is that the university has decided the caffeine content is too high and they have banned them from campus. I want be careful for my friends and I and avoid dealing with the ridiculous punishments the university will enact.

With my problems and plan in mind could you think of any difficulties I may run into or perhaps any tips/advice that could help me out :confused:

With such a small potential sales universe (10-15 people) your profit margin is likely to be razor thin. Sales volume/individual would have to be relatively high in this scenario. If the product is very difficult for them to procure on their own and, you are assuming the bulk of the risk factor, you should be able to command a relatively high, per-unit asking price. If you are unable to do this and are basically just covering the costs of the product as a favor to your friends it is a unsustainable business model.

since when do they sell 'energy drinks' 28 at a time? :wink:

my advice, having also sold sport drinks in college ( :wink: ) is to wait until you are living off campus and never get too big. the money will come.

at one point, i was selling sports drinks to most of the basketball team at my particular college. believe me, it looks suspicious enough when so many people come and go all the time, so imagine what it is like when several 7 foot tall skinny dudes come over for 2 minutes.

and if you aren't selling "energy drinks" why ask about it on a weed growing forum??? why not set up a cart just across from campus... get a dba business license and get out there young person, go chase that dollar...

man I hope youre tryin to be sly and selling weed.

just tell your boys no 1s to give out your number or even tell any one you sell.
also have a off campus stash spot where you keep every thing and do all deals.

Tuition? I thought that was what student loans are for? Your not going to make anywhere close to anything to help pay for tuition by selling cans of pop, Unless your getting them for free, Even then its probably not worth it lol. What a lot of college kids do is get a part time job and work that through college.

Possible problems.

1. Getting pulled over while transporting drink (watch 10 rules for dealing with police)
2. You source gets busted making/buying drink and offers to set you up (they like to move up the drink latter but any bust makes them look good)
3. A "friend" gets busted and you're the first person they think of when the get the bright light (most likely of the possible problems. Plenty of good people have gone down because of this)
4. A "friend" turns out to be an undercover or informant to begin with
5. A "friend" is indiscreet and people you don't know wind up knowing too much

Friends or not face to face drink trading is a dangerous game. Put simply you are the first to get busted and the last to get paid. If you get caught transporting or selling drink you can kiss employment opportunities goodby even if you do get a degree.

Roll the dice if you want but mark my words the trust you place in your so called friends will be your downfall.
