You can look into this product here hxxp://www.kelilong.com/e-gsjj.htm This is a company out of japan that makes knock offs you can find them on ebay for around 20 bucks. They are not the best but they do work but you may have to calibrate quite often so keep that in mind.

do you need a soil or water ph tester?

HM digital makes a good waterproof ph meter for water for around 80 dollars, 76 i think. I bought one on amazon.

only problem with drops is the nutrients i use color the water which totally plays hell with a color chart.

I wouldnt even buy a soil one, i cant seem to get a good reading. I bought a milwaukee 600 or whatever it is, and it seems to work great, i calibrate it every 2 weeks or so and its pretty easy.

a calibrtion solution come with the pen. i have owned a M.I. pH for 8 years and it has not needed calibration once.

How does the Ph 600 work? Ive never used a Ph meter, but most Ive seen had some sort of rod that you had to stick in something. Is this "rod" retractable on the PH 600?

I have pH51. go with it. in a grow shop it is double this price. there is an electrode under the black cap that you dip into your liquid nutrient solution. gives instant reading in parts per million.

I like the PH51 more than the PH600.. Are there any PH/EC meter combo's that are worth having? Cheapest one I see is $188.

not for the money.... i use separate ppm/tds and pH pens. combined they are cheaper. i use MI as well for my ppm's.

ya nickfurry i was looking at that one accually is this the one you use??
ive used thisin the past. it does need to be calibrated frequently but well worth the $20. its a cheap alternative until you can afford a proper meter that will last alot longer and hold calibration.
