In Alabama Democrats control the State House and Senate. Democrats have been in control here a long time, probably since like the 1870's. They aren't like the national Democrats though. Most people not in the South don't know about this stuff, and assume Republican = conservative and Democrat = liberal. True liberals can't really get elected in Alabama unless they are in a heavily black area (and usually are black themselves), but even then can't be too far left. We are Democrat-controlled but are known for having the most conservative state government.
As for myself, I think much of the federal government should be disbanded outright (Department of Agriculture, Education, Housing and Urban Development, the DEA, FBI, etc.) and most of the power should be given back to the states. The federal government should be in the business of protecting citizens from foreign threats and protecting our Constitutional rights and civil liberties by mandate to the states. I think drug use, prostitution, and any other 'victimless crime' should be legalized. They should basically add a Constitutional amendment for such a thing, to guarantee our right to do what we want as long as we aren't hurting others. That is, in my mind, an essential right. What's amazing is that in Alabama you could go to prison for smoking weed but the state government CONTROLS the sale and distribution of liquor. They contribute to countless alcohol-related deaths every year and throw people in prison for getting high while sitting around watching South Park.
Where I disagree with many other libertarians is on immigration and illegal immigration. I don't believe in open borders and I couldn't care less about the "rights" of illegal immigrants. I care about the rights of American citizens, and what happens in other countries or to the citizens of other countries is none of my concern.
