Coco issue

Only thing I can think this is being is a ph issue? Possibly and likely the ph pen being wrong. New one has been ordered. Is it just a case of giving the plants a heavy feed with the same amount of nutes and with a correct ph?

The leaves have started growing slightly twisted and new growth is small. Also the plants branches have seemed to grow thin. It’s not the environment so can only be the ph I assume. Like I say I have a new ph pen arriving in the morning.

pH would be a good guess.
Even with a good pH pen, it's always good to have some pH drops on hand for a sanity check or backup.
Consistent and never needs calibration.

What’s making you think feed related? Just curious.

They get an ec of 1.1 daily. If they was hungry I would expect them to be pale. If overfed I would expect clawing leaves. Of course the ph being out could mess up the availability of nutrients.

I notice with the ph pen, you kind of have to get the ph right the first time you check. If it’s to high and you add more ph down it doesn’t seem to register that you’ve added more. Just going on past experience from how much I’ve had to add. Even though the ph pen is calibrated and reading correct in buffer solutions. That’s what’s pointing me towards a ph issue.

When the new pen arrived should I just feed with the same nutes and the correct ph and be sure you get plenty of run off?

I'm thinking feed related because as long as your 5.8 to 6.3 and allowing swing your ph is fine for coco.

My first thought is feed frequency. If I had 2 make a suggestion it would be drop your feed strength by ⅕ and water 3 times a day. If all is well you can increase feed. But that might be enough

Yeah I’ve always gave a ph in range. I noticed though with this pen. You add your ph down then check it. Say it’s reading 6.4 so think add a few more drops and check again. When you check again it will still read 6.4ph even after adding alot of drops. So much so that I clocked something isn’t right. Hence why I’ve ordered a new pen. So I am thinking it’s very likely almost certain they’ve been given the wrong ph.

The new pen arrives today and when I feed I am going to compare the reading with the other ph pen. Which may I add is less than 3 months old. It’s reading fine in terms of being on point just doesn’t seem to adjust as it should.

The pH drops are cheap, never wrong, and needs no calibration........no pen required.
Been using them successfully for decades.

I would say the roots do not feel free, perhaps changing the pot for the one that allows tips of the roots to come out, the plant will drop off the excessive part, or just a bigger pt. But yea, Ph might also be the case

Yeah calibrates fine, like I say it’s a fairly new pen not even completed a grow with it. Only issue I noticed is it doesn’t seem to read well when you’ve got to add drops to the water after the first reading. For example if I add what I thinks the right amount of ph down. Yet it reads 6.3 so need to add some more ph down. The pen doesn’t seem to read correct when I add more imo. I’ve got a brand new pen here yet to be opened. Going to use that now and flood them to get a fair bit of run off. I will compare how the pens both read. Be a waste of money if they both read the exact same .

Thanks, feel like I’ve finally got better with coco. I also did wonder if root bound plants could be the cause. Thing is I don’t think they are root bound just yet. Another couple weeks and I’d probably be looking to pot up. Quite proud of the roots, spent a long time always thinking it was an area I needed to improve on. Would always have slow veg and poor roots, was watering coco completely wrong as for some reason. I was stupid and packing down the coco too much so it could be over watered. Now seems like I’ve got it going decent…

What light are you running? You will get skinny leaves if it’s too close. I have had ph issue before with hot batches of coco that should have been washed more. I would just use new ph pen and see if the issue continues. It also could use a transplant.

Running 400w. is enough distance between them. The branches are also growing thin. That with the weird leaves and ph pen issue. I’m 99% sure that’s all it is. Was more wanting to know how I go about fixing it than the diagnosis. Course always welcome to other opinions.

I got the new pen out and the readings was different. Only by .2 but it shows the other pen isn’t working 100%. That’s after it was calibrated just the other day. Only had the pen less than 2 months and isn’t the cheapest of pens. Plus like I say I didn’t think the issue was the pen being out. Was more thinking the pen messed up and wasn’t right when it needed to adjust after adding some more ph down. Anyway using the new pen I gave the plants a heavy watering with a ph of 6. Got plenty of run off. Will hopefully start to see a difference in the next watering or two. Will keep everyone updated.

You should ph to 5.8 in coco. You handled it correctly with just heavy watering. Also make sure you feed every time you water never plain water in coco.

I don’t want to speak to soon, still got the funny growing leaves but guess that will take longer than one watering. Seem happier looking though and with a bit more of a colour in them. Guess as with the correct ph the nutes are more freely available. Hopefully couple more waterings and things look alright.
