Thats actually my plan  I popped 12 dracarys seeds a couple days ago, and they all sprouted. Ive got a 2x4 cabinet open, that would fit 2 of these planters perfect. Couple 288s and ill be on my way to a killer head stash. Ive ran this strain a couple times, but ive always mainlined them. I think they will form a decent main cola if I prune side branches and flip them when they hit about 7 nodes?

FiM at #5 and opening each plant up with trellis may fill ur whole space and only minor cleanup around soil line. I’d try to push the side branching to the light rather than prune them. Sub irrigated, the plant has a lot of root space to share and vibrant food supply (if temps and everything is in check for microbial activity in the medium)

either way I’m excited 4 ur thread

I'm thinking of something like that myself

Awesome! Thanks for the info :blsmoke: You said you ran Sunshine Mix #4 in yours. Im not familiar with that, but Google says its a peat based mix? My coots mix soil is peat based, but I downloaded the instructions for the planter, and it says to use a potting mix, not a potting soil. Would my coots mix work in this planter, or do I find a potting mix, and ammend? My guess is that the media needs to have proper wicking properties? I can get a bale of peat, and 3 cu ft of perlite at home depot. I still have most of the ammendments from when I put together my coots mix.

You should b OK with your mix. Just focus on packing your corners properly so the wicking action takes place effeciently. You want damp soil; not wet for the corners and you don't want too many air pockets so layer the damp medium and pat it down gently. They recommend to use a potting mix it because they want u to buy their nutrient blend.

In all honesty there is no such thing as potting soil, potting mix etc. Just dirt with different ratios of amendments innit. Dirt with good stuff that doesn't turn into mud = soil. I suppose. That's a rabbit hole.

Sunshine mix #4 is peat based with little trace element innit good for seeding and starting ; Good for micro-greens if ur into that. After maybe 4th watering it will once again be an inert peat media. I amended it with a plethora of things. Since it is peat and as it breaks down acidifying the rootzone I followed their rule of dolomite layer, medium, mix, nutrients, soil mound. I did not like the trenches of nutrients so I actually mixed it all in half way. U will find what u like.

sorry 4 thread jacking it was an accident. I am subb'd now :bigjoint:

is the dirt mounded up higher than the rim?
Do you ever need to top dress more?
yes the dirt is mounded up way past the rim, then cover with the plastic cover,, no more additions the the soil for me, everything the plants need is in the soil or the whole ride,, including those nute trenches i made,,, later when the grow is over i will show you those trenches,, the plants will not have eaten all of those nutes by the time the grow is over,, its water only the whole ride

these are the bus tubs I was thinking about. I was thinking i could use a lid and trim it down so it sits about 3" off the bottom. drill holes in it and add a pvc pipe fitting so I can add water. then possibly have another lid that is chopped in half that sits over the top the way u are doing w the plastic. I would need to use a float or something so I could monitor the water level tho
yes, in the early parts o f this thread there are guys building these sips out o storage tubs,, and making some really big sips, and filling whole grow rooms with 6 or 8 of them

I bought one of these but I never got to use it in my 4x4... Grew peppers and tomatoes in it though and it did great!!! 30 something dollars from Lowe's... The picture is just how they looked at harvest time... Gonna get one for me to use this time!!!View attachment 4785621
yes home depot sold these also, they are perfect if you have a square tent,,, shape didnt work or my grow box

I use one of those ; sunshine mix #4 and some dry amendments trenches like the OP. It comes with a fabric cover which I prefer to wrapping the plastic so the soil can still breath up top and u don’t risk mold or rot
thank fully using the plastic barrier has blocked any mold or rot for me, never had any yet,, nor bugs,, the plastic keeps the insect out,, without the soil they cant reproduce

I thought the plastic cover allowed the rising moisture to hit the plastic and to turn to droplets of water to then go down through the trenches of fertilier
yes,, the plastic is crucial to the operation of these type of sips,, without it,, you get bugs,, and or mold,, without the plastic the top soil layers are too dry,, but with the plastic,, the soil stays slighty damp all the way to the top,, so the roots will be all over right under the plastic,, using 100 percent of the soil,, when the grow ends the nute trenches look gummy,, and all wrapped in roots

Right on. My theory was the moisture trapping beneath the plastic could cause potential 4 it. But you seem to have it working really well so I believe u

Excited 2 see these things catch root! :eyesmoke: :peace:

No water up top at all, at least I never did... Just fill the res and watch it work...
yup, never top water a sip,, it will throw the whole wicking out of balance,, thats part o the beauty of these,, they take all the work out of watering,, or when to water,, or how much to water,, ,all gone,, just fill the res when it starts to get low

is that the main SIP thread? I searched for bus tubs but didn't get many good results. do u mind sending me a link when u get a chance?

im loving the earthbox but im also going to try a rack style grow and having a few extra inches of height would make a big difference.

thanks for your input,, love having chat on my grows,, good ideas get spread,, there are many ways to use these sips, heck i have used straight bag soil and tomato fert with good success,, sometimes when i didnt ad as much dry fert i would have to ad cal mag to my res,, which worked fine

one other question i had, do u not do any top dressing? everything is preloaded? and no teas or anything?

sure,, yup i have been growing in these things for 5 years, and everytime i try something else i find my way back here,, rather than dig up some of my old grows on rollitup ,, lets just watch this one,,, I am going to Mainline this grow at the start and work towards 8 colas then let it rise
