I tilled the ground, beneath each bed to break it up. Very poor soil back there....less than a foot of black dirt then clay. In the summer it sun bakes and cracks. High water table, too. Hit water about 20" down.
Found some local supersoil at a local sustainable farm- $25 a cubic yard. PH- 8.4 Made up of composted horse manure, paper, leaves, tree bark, worm castings and local resturaunt produce waste. Mixed in Canadian peat moss. Used almost the entire batch.
