Your First Indoor Grow Setups

I 1980 I moved to SW Colorado from New Mexico. The first year an early freeze took my crop. The next year I bought a “complete indoor hydroponic grow kit” from a magazine ad.

The UPS guy saw me (little town) and informed me of a hernia he had just developed while delivering my package. It was here!

A 400 watt HPS streetlight. Literally. Reflector, magnetic ballast the size of a suitcase and about 6’ of 12/3 cable. The hydroponic part was a big kitty litter tray, a bag of red barbecue lava, a cheap pump (supply your own reservoir) and sample kit of nutes.

$400. They didn’t answer the phone anymore either.

I got buckets and everything from the farm I was working on. Got it all set up upstairs.

I instructed Advanced First Aid for the Red Cross. Therefore I knew every cop in southern Colorado. It must have run a week before a county Mountie saw me at the truckstop getting a burger.

“Damn, Slim. You running a parking lot upstairs in that house of your’s?” Just a slight gap in the curtains and you could see it a mile away.

Grandmas secret garden....and a cash crop 5.0. Neither of which are really worth a shit, 100 watt mars reflector light. Thought i would grow pounds and i got 68 grams.

I had the money so the lack of performance was the problem. WTF was i thinking :D

I have advised many to get a tent that fits and light it accordingly. It always starts with how much do you smoke a month......Ok a 2 x 4 with 240 watts will suffice etc.

I am glad my mistakes can help others

Ain't that a kick in the dick lol.
If you dont start at the bottom you can not appreciate the gains along the way :D

I take over a house April 1. I have an L shaped closet that is 16 x 6 feet in an L (16 feet each side).

Had i not cut my teeth on something smaller i would have no idea what to do. But I am ready to begin this endeavor.

4 x 4 closet with 2 air cooled 600w HPS lights. Had a 150w HPS light for my veg/clones in my utility room on a shelf. I would run 5 plants in there.

A 1kw hps in a 4x2 closet what I had to keep the door open on and a box fan blowing in. 3 5 gallon buckets. Got a good harvest but not a ton maybe 8 oz. and got a 4x4 tent for the next run an was getting nearly a lb a run off the bat.

Started with a UFO light from amazon, then got a "400 watt" LED. Then got a 2,000 watt LED. This was in the span of 4 months... Then got 3 cobs and tossed the other lights in the closet. I had a 4x4 initially, but learned I don't have the constitution to care for more than 2 plants at a time, so I went down to a 2x4. Now I have a bubble cloner in the closet and I need to replace my tent again because 6 feet isn't high enough. I may just build a frame in to the wall and add some reflective material and call it a day. I have a perfect sized recess in the wall... Should do this soon.

I rigged an incandescent bulb up inside a box in my room back in the seventies and grew a small plant from a seed that came from a bag of Colombian Gold. It wasn't on a timer or anything and I just plugged and unplugged the light. It was off more than it was on and the plant started flowering at about six inches or so. I plucked it when it had white hairs. I think I got enough for one bowl in my brass pipe. I don't remember it tasting very good. But as I get older I don't remember a lot of things. :bigjoint:

Living in the Southwest desert I never considered growing indoors. I mean it wouldn’t freeze until November and by March it was 80 in the daytime.

Ha ha.

I inherited one of those years ago somehow. They were pure garbage and cost a ton of money. I tore it apart and used the lights for clones. I still have what I scavenged. It had those U shaped lights that went in a 4 pin SG11 base. I just dug the wiring/lighting harness out of a box of junk in the garage. I wonder if I can find some cheap lights for it. I need some more lighting for my vegetable starts.
