last couple of times i have grown in this sip, and used the trench method where the trench is near the top of the soil, and make a good thick trench ,, after the long tomato season and i dumped out the huge tomato plant in the fall,, and broke apart the soil there was still gummy gummed up grey fert in the trenches,, so they still had food , i really like the method myself,

I didn't know about the benefits of the trench being near the top of the soil when I was setting up this last run, I'll have to try that next time. Having recently heard about the plants nutrient seeking roots being ones near the surface, I'm glad that at least I top dress them halfway through, at least I'm putting that where they like to find it. It does make me wonder about the last few runs where I put the extra nutes in the bottom of the pot, I guess its not optimal but it has worked for me. I've also dumped sips and found a vein of fertilizer residue, sort of like sludge. I've wondered if its still rich with nutrients or just an inert by-product left behind.

4.5 weeks flowerIMG_1834.JPG IMG_1836.JPG IMG_1837.JPG IMG_1838.JPG IMG_1841.JPG Space kittles and Jack both have some yellow fading on the very bottom old fan leaves,, but uppers look fine,, ill trim those off in the morning, both are adding flower nicely , jacks leaves are just great,,, space kittie has some edge burn to go with the tip burn,, again nothing serious,, and of course i am doing nothing but tap water,, hahahah,, her buds look great though and that is the key for me,, stretch is long over,, temps have been rock steady

those 5 gallon buckets work awesome, same set up,, with the air gap and the res below,,, the only thing that causes people to move up from buckets is the tiny res ,, my plants can drink up to 2 gallons per day ,, so you will be filling a bucket sip a few times a day when they start doing that,, something to consider,,, have you seen the sip thread here is a link,, lots of DIY cheap builds using storage tubs and such,,, my current sip has a 4 gallon res,, i think Robs has a 10 gallon,, https://www.rollitup.org/t/sip-thread-sub-irrigated-planter.904886/

Tim's got a good point. In most cases, I tried to put a smaller bucket into a bigger one to create more space for the res. For instance when I made big sips in 18 gallon Rubbermaids, instead of stacking another 18 inside, I used a smaller 14 gallon to create more space. With 5 gallon paint buckets, I found a 5 gallon plastic nursery pot that slid in but didn't sit all the way in the paint bucket.

Another issue for some people with 5 gallon paint buckets is how tall they are, if you're in a tent that can eat up a bunch of vertical space. If you are in an open room or have tall ceilings, no worries, otherwise short and wide works well.

Those are good points and I'd like to use something bigger such as Rubbermaids but I'm stuck in a 3x3 tent so I am space limited and I can fit more buckets that totes. I'll have much more space when I move to Oregon soon!

I'm going to see if I can find a pot that'll fit and leave more room for water. That's a great suggestion.

How many plants do you plan to grow in your 3x3?

4-5. Once I did 7 but that was a bit much. I went and found better bucket inserts that leaves me at least 2 gallons for water.

OK, if you're going for 4-5 in a 3x3 I can see why taller/narrower works better for you. I look forward to seeing them set up once you get there. :)

I did a grow where I was using a wick method that morphed into a SIP once roots grew through bottom of the pot into the water. One of the best outcomes so far.
