Hi all just finished my latest grow in soil, and about to start a new hydro set up. Just had a bit of a clean and I no I had a few fungus gnats but didn’t realise how bad. As I said I’ve cleaned the tent and killed and hoovered as far as I can see all of them. Though the odd one does still appear. The question is shall I set up the hydro system, pots, clay pebbles but don’t start the grow yet. My understanding is that they will eventually die/bugger off and I will be gnat free?

Fungus gnats can only exist in an environment where they can lay their eggs - like in moist soil or coco. What kind of hydro system are you going to use?

Fungus gnats can thrive in clay pebbles too. It's what I use as a substrate, and I've had battles with them in the past.
A thin layer of Gnat Nix on top is one way to deal with them.

x2 on what @Johnny Lawrence said. I had them before in my drip ring bucket system with hydroton pebbles.
I used concentrated neem oil diluted and applied a few sprays from a spray bottle to the top surface of the hydroton pellets. After a day, I changed the water in the res because it will make it look cloudy or hazy on the surface of the water. Repeated this step and bye bye knats. I did this on a momma plant, but not sure I would recommend this method on flowering plants in hydroponics.
The mix I used was 2 oz concentrated neem oil, 3-4 drops of liquid dish soap (I used Dawn which is non-antibacterial) mixed into 1 gal of luke warm water.
I can see the Gnat Nix being a good fix too. Smother them bastards!

I ordered a bottle of Tanlin, based on your feedback in an earlier thread and haven't sweated fungus gnats since! A very long overdue thank you!
I just use it every second or third feeding throughout the grow along with a few sticky traps. It's been working great for me.

Oh Mick... Fungus gnats will infect hydroton media's!
I suggest the use of Microbe-lift BMC ..... One res refill is all it takes to get rid of them.

Our non fish containing farm ponds get treated to control skeeters. In the others, the fish eat the larvae. Great stuff!
