1500 watt LED grow seedling question

Hi there, I was wondering, after the seed is germinated, and placed in soil in the dark, can I use a 1500 watt LED, like keeping it very far away?? I have no other lights to use and am tapped for money. The light isn't dimmable so I was wondering if keeping it very far away for the first bit as seedlings will work, I have heard of people with m.h lights do it...thanks

Use 23W spiral CFLs, even under cobs I get stretch in seedlings. There is no stretching of seedlings under CFLs.

No idea. I am playing with it at the moment. Even at about half the distance to COB from the canopy of the adult plants, they are still stretching after germination.
With a CFL at 1 or so inches away there is virtually no stretching until about the 3rd set of leaves come in.

i have my freshly ropted clones 3 feet away from my led under larger vegging plants. youngns dont need too much light esp on 24 hr cycle

Yes, the same light I use for clones and vegging plants seem inadequate for seedlings. I was a bit surprised as it works very well at keeping node space tight on the larger clones and plants.
Hundreds of dollars of COBS outperformed by 23W spiral LEDs

sure but turn it down and make sure the seedling can handle it. if not a little shade never hurt unti9l the little carotids have some new leaves to work with

So, turning down COBS would be second choice to the 23W cfl, or not a choice at all?

If you move the light further away after initial leaves, turn the light up to reduce stretch. If light is strong enough seedling will not stretch. I grow seedlings under 200w in a 2x2 50w/sf. After first leaves they take off, just keep up with the food.GrowGreen200w.jpg

what is the exact light you have?

I'm using vero 29s, I am trying to see when the stretching will stop. I'm scared going any closer will fry the seedlings. Will definitely be culling the current seedlings under cobs. Many people are ok with 2" tall seedlings. I want a couple of leaves before it goes past 1"

each of those should be about 200 ppfd in a square foot at 20W/cob

so its more about dimming them then about raisng them

Also if anyone is going to go buy a couple or thee bulbs to put their seedlings/clones under, don't buy cfls, buy some led bulbs and pop the diffusers off. They work great, actually send the light where you want it to go, are more efficient, and last for many years.

Cobs/leds are fine for seedlings. If your worried about stretch out of the gate, run 24/0 from the start......
