hello,
i am 2.5 weeks into veg running mh lights, but its getting super hot so i want to switch to 20/4. would this shock the plants? and also would it be ok to switch back to 24/0 for the remainder of the veg time if it cools down again? thx!

ya man you can pretty much switch anywhere from 18/6 to 24/0 without much shock... no worries man... the shock comes from the big 12/12 haha

The cannabis bible says different - make your choice between 24/0 and 18/6 (or 20/4/ whatever) at the beginning but don't fuck about with it later on. I'm on 24/0 and wish I'd gone with 18/6 but don't want to change mid veg.

i just went from 24-0 to 18-6 after my clones were well established and rooted and many of us to the same thing, No book or video is in reality a "Bible" sure there are some basic rules that stay but most have exceptions.

you have to understand that books like the cannabis grow bible among other grow books are geared towards people who have never grown... in order for people to say good things bout the book they have to get good results from the methods described in the book. they want to give the most precise instructions that will allow for the most consistent results.. obviously if they said you can change it whenver some noob might go switch it five times a day and would fuck their shit up, thus reflecting badly on the book....

that being said i have too switched my cycles and in some cases several times due to various conditions and have never had a problem.. at least not one that i noticed... so go ahead and switch it... she will be fine

No problems.
I always do that. Seedlings under 24/0 for a week or two then they go to 18/6 or 20/4. Never seen a problem, stress or stunt. They keep on as usual.

something new every day... That'll save me some electric then and help to keep the place a bit cooler. Thanks.

Exactly. From an evolutionary standpoint, these plants have adapted to all kinds of environmental factors including sudden ones like objects obscuring light then moving and revealing the source again. Change em as you see fit, jus watch to see how they react. You wont get hermies from 24/0 to 20/4.. natural lighting changes more drastically than that throughout the season (prior to reaching 12/12)

for the dark period, can i have the room light on (75w soft white) or is it supposed to be complete darkness? i know for 12/12 it should be complete dark but what aout veg? thanks!

i mean technically speaking you could because that would just be a 24/0 period with the last 6 hours being weaker.... kinda defeats the purpose

i just wanted to be able to work in there during the dark period w/o having to use the green led head light. but i see whacha mean...

Should be OK to temporarily reduce the lights-on period.

Do the veg area temps usually play nice? Are you just having a spell of hot weather? How close to the air intake temp does the room stay?

You're right, it'll be fine in veg to use the room light during the 4h lights off.

i had no problem alternating between 24/0 and 18/6. sometimes they liked a little darkness. sometimes they liked all the light they could get. they pretty much slept when i did which is not much.

My mums run 24/0 usually, but I've had occasion in the past like slc to knock that back to 18/6 in high summer (off during 11a-5p), probably for the reason he's doing it, to avoid the peak air temps of the day. Once the few weeks of top summer temps were done, I'd switch back to 24/0, never a problem. Only difference is the mums regenerate somewhat more slowly after doing a pass of cuttings.

yea i think playing around with the lighting periods is alright for vegging but definately not for 12/12
